Option not to use UNIX style "mouse-over" viewer b

Post by ACN »

Hi,

Well, personally I would default to post this under "bug reports", but to avoid any "hard feelings" from the *NIX users, I thought I'd treat it as a feature request instead ;)

Currently the UltraVNC viewer window has a peculiar "quirk" (as seen by any Windows user at least), in that it will only accept keyboard-input whenever the mouse is over the window (and not, as per Microsoft standard, as long as the window has focus).

Furthermore I have been unable to find any way to disable this behaviour.

While I'm sure many *NIX users like the fact that the UVNC viewer is behaving as they are used to from X-Windows (and similar), it is quite annoying for us Windoze users, if mainly because we are used to something different (at least I'm so used to moving the mouse out of the way when I type, that I constantly find that I need to move it back over the viewer window and retype whatever text I (thought I) was sending to the server.)

My request is simply this:

- Please provide some way to change this behaviour back to the (Windows) default (of accepting keyboard input as long as the window has focus, despite of where the mouse location).

Also, you might consider making this option the default, at least on win32 builds, seeing as it is the OS default (and thus few Windows users will be aware of the alternative, since thirdparty software, or TweakUI from MS, is needed to get the Windows mouse to behave like X-Windows).

In fact, I really think you should seriously consider removing this behaviour completely, as it should rightly be the OS, and not the individual apps, that decide how such things work. Thus any Windows user wanting "X-Mouse" functionality will probably be wanting it in ALL his Windows apps, and not only in VNC, and should thus rather install some (thirdparty or MS) "X-Mouse" utility.

= = =

On a side-note: Could something be done about the pointer "handling"? While not a big problem, it would be nice if the (client-side) cursor were better at taking on the right "shape" at the right time(s).

As it is now, the shape will only change after, say dragging, has begun, but not when the mouse is moved on top of a drag-corner, a border or similar (which can make it quite difficult in some situations, to position the mouse correctly over very thin borders or small drag-corners etc.)

Alternativly, the option/mode where only the server-side pointer is shown might be made to work better (at least I can't get it to work properly as, depending on the choosen compression method, either nothing at all is shown or a black square is shown instead, typically leaving ugly trails as the mouse is moved?)

Regards,

ACN.
