authentication failed

Post by achim203 »

I try to connect to vnc from a remote network via vpn. after entering the password i always get the authentication failed message, even though the password is correct. when i connect from a station in the local network it works just fine. any ideas about this problem?

Bump, I have the same issue. On the server I have set the same password in both user and default setting.

If I try to connect without DSMPlugin I can log in from local network. If I log in from WAN side I get an UltraVNC password dialogue box but "Password failed" error after submitting the password.
If I use a DSM plugin, I can still log in locally but from WAN side I get an error that says:

Connection failed - Invalid protocol!

Possible causes:

- You've forgotten to select a DSMPlugin and the server uses a DSMPlugin

- The selected DSMPlugin is not compatible with the one running on the server

- The seleted DSMPlugin is not correctly configured

- The password you've possibly enterd is incorrect

It could be a firewall settings issue.
The Lan is in your trusted zone, the Wan is out of your firewall trusted zone.

Can you check if you have a Firewall prompt/alert somewhere when you try to connect from the WAN (with or without the DSMPlugin) ?
Also check your Firewall intrusions logs.
Maybe you need to allow WinVNC/vncviewer in your Firewall settings.

Other idea:
- Are you running WinVNC as a service with DSMPlugin ?
- Stiil with DSMPlugin, have you tried to run WinVNC as an application and got the message "An instance of WinVNC is already running".

-> Try to kill any WinVNC running process on the server machine, the restart it as an application only (+ use DSMPlugin). can you now connect from outside ?

I've opened the ports on my firewalls, both on the router and on the vnc server machine. I know that the ports are open since I do get a password dialogue when trying to log in. before opening the ports I just got connection failed errors.

I have disabled the DSMplugin at the server to simplify troubleshooting.

After entering the password I get the previously list password failed error from a local machine using the WAN side ip address.

From my work machine I get a password dialogue, enter the password, see a quick flash of a window opening and then it goes away without any error.
