Nubee help

Post by Ironrod60 »

I've done a search for the proper config for my situation, but cannot find it, so I have to start this new topic.....

I am trying to help a friend in CA. We both use XP. Both have UVNC installed and configured per the instructions on the UVNC website. I am hard wired she is on wireless. I have my IP and her IP, but neither of us can connect to the other. We get the "failed to connect to server" box. Both of our firewalls are off.

I have tried to turn off MS logon, but that doesn't work either. I have used UVNC in my home before between my wireless laptop downstairs and the hardwired desktop upstairs and it worked perfectly. Is the problem in the domain name? I know very little about this kind of stuff (I had to look up what NAT meant, but I still don't understand it) so you'll have to be patient with me.

Any help?

Thanks.

Big Al

well as a guess I would say that you problem would be that you didnt forward the internet ip from your router to your viewer pc and from her server to the her router..

If you want to get it working that way we will try to help but the fastest way to fix this would probably by using pchelpware with one of the public repeaters. www.pchelpware.com.. The Topic also listed as Pchelpware rel 1.0 in the forum has a bunch of stickies under it.

Let us know which way you are going to go with..:)

OK. I downloaded pchelpware and am in the middle of following the pdf instructions. When it comes to creating the self extracting server and it shows me the address, the example shown is 123.123.123.123....what I actually have is two vertical lines with a goofy looky "c" with a tail on it. The tail goes down from the bottom of the "c" like it would on a "p" except the tail is centered in the middle instead of on the left side like a "p".

I figured I'd better stop there and get some advise.

Should I move to the pchelpware thread now?

The application uses uvnc.com to detect you public IP address, but currently there is a problem that leads to the nonsense you're seeing. Enter you public IP address or DynDNS hostname at this point.

Ok. That worked. Now I'm at the Upnp and auto map. I have no idea if I want this selected or no. Also, am I understanding that I do not need to set this up as dynalias or via repeater?

After that I am unclear if I go through the same process on my friends computer and that will complete the process?

Upnp and automap are intended to automatically configure your router to port forward TCP traffic on port 5500 to the PC you're using, but I'm unsure if they are working. I deselect this and manually set up the port forwarding in my router.
Also, am I understanding that I do not need to set this up as dynalias or via repeater?
No, you can set up a direct connection to the PC you'll be using for support.

No, you'll be creating an executable that you'll need to transfer to your friend. You'll run the viewer and start it. Your friend will start the server and select connect.

I think I did everything right and I got a viewer widow with my screen on it, but it kept opening screens to infinity. Did I screw something up?

Sounds like you're running the viewer and server on the same machine. If so sounds correct.

Did you use you private IP or public IP address?

I used the ipconfig at the command prompt and got the IP from there. Is that private?

Where do I get the info on transfering my executable?

Ipconfig would be your private address..

Need to use whatismyip.com to get your internet address...

Also if you are using a standard dsl or cable connection might need to use dynamic dns service like dyndns.org

That's your private IP. Your public IP can be found by visiting http://www.whatsmyip.org/. However most ISPs provide a dynamic IP so you're better off setting up a free account at http://www.dyndns.com/ where you can get a hostname that will track your IP address.

I'm getting deeper into what I don't know the more stuff I try to do. :-)

OK, I setup a free account at dyndns.com. I also have my public IP addy. During the setup it has a spot for the ip in the data base and then a spot for the new IP addy. Which IP addy do I put in those spots?

What do I do know? Which IP addy do I use to configure the pchelpware executable?

you need to setup your account in your router then it should automatically update the address of your dynacccount ip..:). Most routers will want a username, password and the url..:)
