Help

Post by cameronbradford »

I am trying to setup a direct connection, I made a dyndns host, I forwarded port 5500, and did everything right, I can connect to any comptuer on my netowrk.

Only thing I cant seem to do is connect to my freinds through the internet I give them the server, and they click connect and nothing happens. I have my viewer on start and all that.

I turned all my security off on my router, and made sure port 5500 was forwarded. I am running Windows XP.

SO basically my friends cant connect ot me through the internet, but I can connect through my home network just fine.

Please help! Thanks.

What did you enter when PcHelpWare_viewer.exe asked you for the IP address when creating the server? You need to enter the public IP address, or better yet you DynDNS hostname. If you have, then PortQry should help find where the connection is broken.

Download Microsoft's PortQry utility to a machine inside your LAN. Start the PcHelpWare_viewer so that it is waiting for a connection. Run the PortQueryUi utility and configure it as follows only use port 5500 instead of 5900:

where hostname is you DynDNS host name or you can simply use you public IP address.

What went wrong Cam I thought this was all setup and running. Are you still using the same DYNDNS account. I can see if your port is listening from here. Need to start the viewer to test.

Its working, I am setting it up on the computer at my moms, and cant seem to get it work... when me nd you did it it its fine and nothing wrong. Just now like When im there I can control any computer on our network, but then if I try to connect to a friend over the internet it wont connect, like I'll start he viewer then when he clicks my nae in the server, then he click connect nothing happens there desktop is suppose to pop-up and it doesnt, on his side the one with the server, the connect button stay's pushed in, and doesnt let him click it again.

So tis like something is blocking my connection from the internet or something, liek I said I did the port forward and all that, and disabled all security on the router.

What do you think?

Since you can make the PHW operate normally in your LAN connection, so basically you have built a good server & viewer. Here are some hints that may help to to locate your problem.

1. The port 5500 of YOUR internet connection is blocked.
How to verify: Start your viewer to wait for connect, then visit this site, http://www.pcflank.com, at left hand side,
select "Advance Port Scanner" --"Start Test" --"Continue" -- "TCP connect scanning (standard)" --"Continue" -- "Scan desired ports and/or the range of ports", and enter 5500 into the box, -- "continue"
If the test result is "Open", OK,
Otherwise the port is blocked, possible causes may be:
* improper setting of the router, port forwarding;
* the port is blocked by your ISP

2. The port 5500 of YOUR FRIEND's internet connection is blocked.
If you got OK at step 1., this may be the cause, try to test the server at some more locations.

3. Incorrect IP address of your dyndns host
Does your ISP provide you a fix IP or dynamic IP? For a dynamic IP, you need to update this information to the dyndns service provider. This is usually done with a small utility regular check the IP.; or some router has this build-in function, but still need a proper config.
How to verify: Again visit http://www.pcflank.com , at left hand side,
select "Advance Port Scanner" --"Start Test" --"Continue"
OK, you will see your external IP, mark down it.
Then open a CMD PROPMT windows, ping your dyndns host name, like this:
Ping your_host.dyndns.org [Enter]
compare the returned IP, it should be same as the one you got from http://www.pcflank.com, otherwise....then you know what goes wrong.

4. Not a problem of above
Then I suggest you show us the content of the helpdesk.txt for further investigation.
