VNC installation on a Vista

I need to run VNC on my new vista as a server to an XP client.
What security stuff do I need to turn off in Vista ? OR an exact install method would be nice. I cant even ping the thing from my XP box.
I am beginning to think Vista was a mistake...

Vista is not compatible with UVNC at this time.. Pchelpware will work as a work around but not the same a UVNC.

Whenever Vista pops up a security dialog asking 'Do you want to do this?" (e.g. run regedit), UltraVNC crashes. When I log in again, the security dialog cannot be seen.

We are almost done with the UltraVNC workaround to make it work under Vista

The workaround is an "oldie but a goodie". It's not as nice or elegant as running as a service, but this worked for our Vista computer. Uninstall the service, and simply COPY the UVNC server icon into the startup folder. Once you set it up the same way with the user names and connection info it will be the same.

The workaround is unfortunately not the same. For the workaround to work it requires that someone has logged on to the computer to activate the startup folder. If you are doing maintenance on a computer remote off hours and need to restart the computer you can not log on to that computer again before someone logs on for you (with UVNC running as a service this is possible).

We already have a patch that works quite well, but we have a few details to solve before putting it online for beta test
(WinVNC is run as localSystem under users sessions which may be dangerous, we have some default parameters loading things to fix on bootup and a workaround to finish with keyboard/mouse access to elevated Vista windows)

If you are intentionally having several users, unfortunately I don't have a workaround for that. Personally this is just another reason I don't like having multiple users on a single machine. When I have to work on a machine with multiple users and have to remove spyware and viruses, often the owners don't understand why I have to spend so much time logging in to each account, and then of course why I'm charging them so much. I then have a lot of owners just tell me to wipe out the extra users and only clean up the one that's left, which also saves them the time of doing weekly maintenance on each account.

Unfortunately your tip only work if it is a standalone computer. The computers I'm working with are members of a domain where you need to press CAD to login, i.e. autologin doesn't work.

Hi Guys,

Any further update on when UVNC will work on Vista? I have a WinXP computer in the lounge room and in my office I had WinXP as well and I would remote connect into the loungeroom PC to schedule shows on the digital TV card.

Now that I've wiped XP off my office PC and installed Vista, I can't connect. This means I have to go to the loungeroom and program shows via the TV which as you can guess, don't have the best clarity compared to a monitor.

Looking forward to when I can connect.
