questions about SC setup + NAT

Post by spenlinhauer »

SO I am a expert computer user, but a newbie at VNC.

I have been able to get both UltraVNC and SC working in the office - between computers.
I assume that the SC exe file is actually, connecting to the WAN (DSL) and then back to our router before arriving at the viewer machine. As I am using Dynalias to find "me".
As opposed to when I use the UltraVNC server/viewer setup, which is only running on the local lan.

I have not been able to get another computer outside our network to work correctly though. When the SC.exe file is run, I get the dialog popup to confirm, I do, then the viewer window pops up, flashes, and then goes black. I have the program Icons, but the remote screen is "black".
The mouse pointer turns into a small square. The remote computer apprently sees my mouse movements, but the connection is lost shortly there after.

My questions are:

1. Could the fact that the remote computer is behind a NAT router affect this?
2. Are there other software programs that could prevent the server machine from sending?
3. Could this be related to me improperly configureing the encription key?

As an aside, I have found information on the use of the key, and its setup, at least in relation to the SC program, hard to understand.
If the key is issued in the exe, but the viewer listening does not have the pluging checked, does that mean that it will not accept the incoming request? (I have not figured out how to save the plugin as checked as the default)

thanks
SEPP!

My answer are:

1. No
2. yes, some: anti-spyware, anti-virus, firewall, etc..
3. yes, the correct line is:
Launch the viewer from Start... Run...
"%programfiles%\UltraVNC\vncviewer.exe" -dsmplugin MSRC4Plugin_NoReg.dsm -listen 5500

from UltraVNC FAQ
[topic=3278][/topic]

the black screen issue could be:

- previously used MS Remote Desktop Connection
- unstable network
- 3D bronze pointer or 3D White pointer (Control Panel ... Mouse ... Pointers)
- screen saver with password

otherwise

Hmmn - I read about the PcHelpWare, but it is really greek to me.

I have tried the connection again, with two new files, one with the video dll included, and the other adding an Rc4 key made on my machine, but I don't have enough information about how to troubleshoot.

I am also thinking that getting the setup to work without encryption first would be the way to go, but I get the feeling that NOT using encryption could actually be a problem. Additionally, if the remote sc.exe does not have an rc4.key in the file, I assume that the viewer will accept it or let me know that the key/plugin is mssing? I.E. The software will let me know there is a mis-match between server and viewer?

I am making assumptions about the remote machine that because the remote computer is able to contact my viewer, that it can send information out. But this assumes that the initial contact is made on the same ports as the actual session. Is this true?

If that is the case, how do I check on the problems that you listed previously:

MS remote dc: would this problem be on the viewer machine (YES) or the server machine (assume no> will confirm)?
If the viewer machine has had a previous MS connection, how do I configure to fix that?

unstable network: seems rather broad to evaluate? email is send and received under 1 minute, IM converstations happen instantly.

Pointers: (viewer machine has standard XP pointers, and Assumed that remote machine does too> will confirm)

Screen Saver Password> Viewer machine - no, remote machine, not sure, assume no.

(remote machine was setup and configured by me, however that was two years ago - user may have made changes)

As for using the PcHelpWare, I feel dumb trying to figure out how to use.
What gets installed where?
What gets sent to the remote machine?

If I am out of line, and the answers to my problems are in the forum, please let me know what to search for, I keep coming up empty...

Thanks SEPP!

Yes,
- You've forgotten to select a DSMPlugin and the Server uses a DSMPlugin
- Viewer and Server are not compatible (they use different RFB protocoles)
- dsmplugin not support concurrent multi-sessions (not exist but should be added but not (yet) available.

what the exact error reported from the vncviewer ?

yes, for reverse connection over port 5500 (SC request callback to vncviewer)

if sc could contact your vncviewer, there no problem,
don't try to find problem about firewall or anything.
Search about misspelling command line of vncviewer -listen -dsmplugin -msrc4plugin_noreg.dsm
the plugin should be msrc4plugin_noreg.dsm 1.2.2.0 renamed as msrc4plugin.dsm inside SC for working.

like SC,
PCHelpware_server for customer who require help
PCHelpware_viewer for consultant, yourself.
please read the file readme.txt inside PCHelpware4.zip
