WebEX proxy mode request

Post by mnott »

Hello all,

I'm not new to VNC (had even done some development on it back in 1997), yet I am new to Ultr@VNC. My company uses WebEX a lot as it allows for creating remote control sessions through most firewall scenarios transparently. You just install a daemon on a computer to be controlled, and that daemon connects to a WebEX server and tells him he is there (through port 80). From your controlilng computer, you see that client machine in your list going online, you click on it and you can remote control it including file transfer etc. What does not work is the remote controlling computer to run under linux.

Any ideas on how to realise that with Ultr@VNC?

Rgds,

you can use it trough wine for Linux ?

UltraVNC is for windows (there no developpement for Linux except repeater ported to Linux by

for use with Linux, you need to use javaviewer or wine with Ultra VNCViewer
but is for remote control windows XP from Linux, is better to use KRmote Desktop trough RDP protocol

for remote support (some one at front of remote computer (client/friend),
SC for windows is one solution trought repeater and forwarded to Ultra vncviewer under wine for Linux
don't ask me how, I don't know at all, just read that is possible.

for remote control. use freeNX Server for Linux
and use from windows/Linux/ NX client

Well, the thing I am referring to is that we need to go through port 80. This is the big plus of WebEX and they squeeze a lot of money out of their customers for being able to do so.

I have a SSL-VPN setup using UltraVNC Single Click. It works through port 443 which gives you encryption for free. Check out SSL-Explorer (free / gpl) here:

http://3sp.com/showSslExplorer.do?referrer=sslexplorer

and you have to create an app for UltraVNC SC. It only took me about 30 minutes to get everything configured. I could send you my "app" after you get your SSL-Explorer configured. Here's how I set it up...

SSL-Explorer forwards a local port (customer's local port 5500) to my computer using SSL (443) via SSL-Explorer. My SSL server can forward that connection to any computer predefined in the tunnel on the local network. However, I wanted to be able to connect anyone in the world to anyone else in the world. This was a little more complicated. I setup SSL-Explorer to take port 5500 from the local host (local host being the customer's machine) to a UltraVNC Repeater. The repeater requires a session ID, so I set SC to prompt for that. So, the Client (customer) -> server (repeater) using port 443 is completed. Now, I need the viewer -> repeater connection. This was easy. I have setup a login in ssl-explorer to forward port 5900 on the local (viewer) pc to the SSL-Explorer server, which connects it to the repeater. In the viewer, you specify "Use Proxy / Repeater: 127.0.0.1:5900" and for the VNC server: you put in this: "ID:####" where #### is the number that the customer specified (or will specify) as the session ID.

Overall it works great. I could probably do a whole writeup on how to configure it, but I'd rather you just ask questions and I give you answers, and someone else writes it up. First step though is getting SSL-Explorer setup. I have successfully used this through many different customer's firewalls, nats, etc... in most cases, it's easier to use and faster than WebEx.
