Here follows a brief description of our stations:
- 2 boxes: Two Dual Core Opteron; 4GB ram; running XP Pro 64bits; integrated mobo ATI graphic card.
1 box: Xeon; 1GB ram; running 2K3 server; integrated mobo ATI graphic card.
plenty other boxes: running 2K SP4 or XP Pro SP2; but with standalone graphic cards (mainly Nvidia).
Actually, for the XP64 & Opteron, I got the worst response ever seen on a VNC product on a LAN!!! These cpu are Dual Core, so the 64bits system has 4 real cpu to handle threads and jobs, but when connected to the UVNC server, the client respond so slowly... It's impossible to work correctly. It's not due to the network: meanwhile connecting to uvnc, a standard file transfer (not through uvnc) between client and server takes a correct time on a gigabit network.
In "normal" condition, on a 100Mbs LAN, I have the feeling to be directly on the server machine. So in this case (XP64 & Opteron), I'm not able to understand if it is due to MS XP64 or to integrated ATI card...
But, on the 2K3 server box, also with integrated ATI card, also on the same gigabit network, it is not so slow, but abnormally slow! As previously said: on this LAN speed, accessing a XP box with Nvidia graphic card is higly responsive. When connecting on the 2K3 server box, you have to wait a few seconds for each action to be completed.
But I still cannot determine if it is due to ATI card and their hardware or drivers in itself, or to the fact that these are mobo integrated cards. Cos I also have a box with XP Family and a standalone Radeon 9200SE which is higly responsive through a DSL line (I'm able to visualize window's content while moving them!).
On the slow boxes, I've tried with or without the mirror driver, it doesn't change anything, the response's slowness of the actions makes the use impracticable.
Something else common to our boxes with ATI cards: You have to move away the mouse pointer from where you just clicked, because if you leave it where you clicked, there no refresh of the whole screen, neither of the area under the click.
If the team could give me some clues: what to test? Where to look? What to observe? Especially for the XP64 and 2K3 boxes, because these machine are render stations or server located in the special refrigerated room!!! So, I prefer to manage them from my desk!!!
