Unable to remote access my Home Pc

Post by Dodgywheel »

I have setup Ultra VNC on my home pc and laptop , and can connect to desktop via http no problem over my home wireless network, but i cannot seem to connect over the http from work, I have a USR sure connect 9106 and have forwarded all the ports , 5500, 5800, 5900 for both tcp and udp for both my internet ip address and my network ip address for both desktop and laptop, i am running zonealarm and have internet and server access for both the UVNC viewer and server all green ticked, but still can't connect remotely to my desktop, i have tried to connect from work and from friends pc but still no joy. have followed the FAQ's and docs on this site and everything seems ok, Hopefully someone can help me Thanks.

You don't need to forward ports to your "Internet IP address." just the local IP of each machine. So, port 5900 and 5800 on the router needs to be forwarded to 192.168.1.x (desktop) and port 5901 and 5801 would be forwarded to 192.168.1.y (laptop) (change the x and y to match your internal IP addresses for each machine).

Zonealarm startup problem

Post by Mr. Finn »

Zonealarm is the culprit... solution is to add, if you are behind NAT, the routers IP to firewalls trusted zone. (trusted zone is in medium level)

The problem is that the Zonealarm doesn't like the UltraVNC service to start so early at the boot... you can try this by booting and no connection, then open services and stop and start again the VNC Server and voila, everything works magically... until you reboot...

Zonealarm startup problem

Post by Mr. Finn »

Well, it didn't work after couple of reboots... BUT I did find a another fix and it did it for me, I rebooted at least ten times and every time the ultravnc server was accessible. :D

I made myself a reminder note if I ever would need this in future:

ZoneAlarm 6.1.737.000 (free, pro not tested)
UltraVNC 1.0.1 (other VNCs not tested)

Delaying the startup of the VNC server until after ZoneAlarm is the solution!

Create a service dependency on ZoneAlarm in xVNC so that xVNC will not start until ZoneAlarm is started.

This is done by editing the registry. All services can be found:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

The ZoneAlarm service is 'vsmon' and UltraVNC is 'winvnc'. (other VNC names may vary)

To create the dependency, create a new key of type REG_MULTI_SZ under 'winvnc' called 'DependOnService'
with a value of 'vsmon'. You can verify it's correct by going into the Services Control Panel and looking
at xVNC's properties, dependencies tab and you should see a dependency upon 'TrueVector Internet Monitor'.
