Newbe simple questions...for you!

Post by Ohtime »

Hi some simple questions for you masters, most of this is new to me, but I do see the light (very dim right now).

1. Doing testing on my local network. When I set up SC with my local PC IP number it just opens then closes real fast. I am following the steps in the FAQ. The full UltraVNC works fine. If I put in a DNS address it opens fine. What am I doing wrong?

2. I followed some directions on the net to open port 5500 in my Zonealarm Pro firewall. When I tested it with shields up it did not see the port. Is this a good way to test if the port is open?

3. I set up DYNDNS with my dynamic IP number. Does this need to be pointed at port 5500? If so how do you do this? What is an EZ way to test that I did my set up right? When I just brows to the DNS address it does not find anything.

Thanks for all the help. You guys are great.

Not actually sure what you mean by DNS address?? I am guessing that you mean Ip address and yes you really should use IP address or Fully Qualified Domain Names

Computer names dont work in XP after SP2. netbios is disabled

From FAQ failed to connect

Single click is a reverse connection so you have to have a viewer in listen mode running before you active the Single click.

Is a good place to see if your port is open. Some Users have posted that the are having problems with Zone Alarm not passing mouse activity etc.
So see if you can turn it off completely then try it may work..
3. I set up DYNDNS with my dynamic IP number. Does this need to be pointed at port 5500? If so how do you do this? What is an EZ way to test that I did my set up right? When I just brows to the DNS address it does not find anything.
One of the easyiest way to test your DYNDNS is to try to ping it. This can be done by left clicking start then type" cmd" in the run command.

It will open a dos window. Left click in that windows and type"ping whatever.dyndns.org"

the whatever is what you created and the .org can be different depending on what you selected

If it responds back with the correct Ip address then it is working.

You do have to open the port 5500, and which other ports you have configured for your winvnc server to be able to be used via the internet.

Single click should work with only port 5500 unless you changed the default port then it would be whatever port you change it to.

remember:
SingleClick(file you give for your friend) initate the connection to vnc viewer listening port 5500 (yourself)

on this way,
only SingleClick (aka vnc server) need to know address of the dynamicdns and written to helpdesk.txt for reach your vnc viewer.

helpdesk.txt
[HOST]
my.dynamicdns.tld::5500

only you (viewer for listening)
need port 5500 opened on your NAT router and redirect to your internal computer
Start... all Programs... UltraVNC ... UltraVNC Viewer ... Run UltraVNC Viewer (listen mode)
or
http://sc.uvnc.com/V2/vncviewer15BETA.exe
run vncviewer15BETA ... go to menu File ... Start Listener
(only allow port 5500 from menu, other non standard port need to be started from batch or command line, shortcut modified)

Possible failure testing SingleClick with dynamic dns address
If you test your singleclick internally on your LAN with a dynamicdns address,
sometime, the dyndns address can't lookup external and back to internal network with some home NAT/router had a limited feature of dynamic dns
