Viewer window closes when connected over internet

Post by kicks »

Systems involved are XP pro, SP2, all windowsupdates recommended,
encryption plugin is not used, long versions of ultravnc up to 1.1.01 work well.

When I use UltraVnc SC based on RC 2.3 or the test version based on REL 1.00 within a LAN, connecting to vncviewer 1.0.0.18 or 1.0.0.20 or 1.1.01 works properly. Windows Firewall and Zonealarm do not obstruct it.

However, when connecting the same machines over the internet instead, connection stays alive 15 seconds only. As soon as the remote desktop icons get visible in the viewer, the viewer window closes. Shutting down one of the firewalls does not affect this behavior.

Many thanks in advance for all hints,
Thomas

Ive done extensive testing with SC

I found that DSL or other broadbands are fine.

Satellite is adequate.

Dial up sucks.

I do agree that I have had some issues with a dailup connection and SC but It does not say kicks is using dailup. But if it takes 15 seconds to show a desktop in a viewer then something isnt right.

This could be caused by a lot of reasons.

1.) is connection speed you may have issues with low bandwith.

2.) Your Internet connection is unstable and keeps resetting.

What type of a firewall or router are you going through??

You proved that you have UltraVNC setup properly if you can connect via LAN.

If you have the desktop showing up for 15 seconds then your settings are probably right.

By any chance, are you trying to do this on a modem connection?? Like Lharvey suggusted may be the issue..

I am pleased with your quick replies in this forum even on a holiday. Many thanks!

My LAN has internet access by a Microsoft MN-700 router. Max. speed is 2.000 downstream. 384 upstream. For testing internet connections, I take out one LAN machine, de-activate its LAN-connections, and dialup with a 64k ISDN line instead.

Under these internet conditions, the full version of winvnc.exe is stable, connects pretty fast and transmits desktop changes with a latency of some seconds only. It traverses all firewalls, since the router forwards port 5900 to the particular LAN machine involved, and the Windows Firewall (SP2) as well as an optional Zonealarm grant all rights required.

To be more precise, however: connections are stable up to winvnc.exe version 1.0.0.18. only. But with versions 1.0.0.20, 1.1.0.0 and 1.1.0.1, the viewer window autocloses after some seconds in the same way as I posted for SC. This behavior does not depend on the version of the viewer nor on a particular machine. It can be reproduced with other LAN clients and with XP as well as Windows 2000.

kicks,
Thanks for the update, I am hearing that some users are having issues with the UltraVNC 1.0.1 across the forum. You might be caught in that problem.

I use my SC connections into a repeater so that I can look at the log and see if they are coming in and then I connect the viewer to the repeater and I have had very good luck this year.

I am not sure if 64k is enough bandwith for a SC connection with UltraVNC 1.0.1 should be but not 100%

Are you using MSRC4 encryption??

The instability of connection is not healed, unfortunately, if the external machine uses an increased dialup with 2 ISDN lines with 128 k.

The encryption plugin is not included in this stage. Later it should be.

Good idea to include a repeater. I'll report on effects.
Thanks again for your continuous suggestions.

Solution found: Connection keeps stable, if the viewer is listening with the option "Let remote server deal with mouse cursor". So I start the viewer with an options file: [topic=4821][/topic]
