A newbie IP-related question
A newbie IP-related question
I have assigned static IP's within my home network, but it seems that my public IP address keeps changing (possibly after rebooting, though that doesn't make sense to me). So I have to know the current public IP for my home network every time I want to contorl one of its computers from a remote location. This is annoying as I would much rather just remember an address once and for all, rather than check it every time I leave and plan to use UltraVNC. However, from my understanding, there's nothing much I can do about it. Am i right or am i missing something really simple?

You need something like Dynamic DNS.Anonymous wrote:I have assigned static IP's within my home network, but it seems that my public IP address keeps changing (possibly after rebooting, though that doesn't make sense to me). Read here:
http://www.dyndns.com/about/home_solutions.html
http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/
You sign up (free), download and install a client (I use DirectUpdate).
The client software periodically checks your external IP, and if it has changed, updates the dyndns servers.
An external PC can just use your-name-here.dyndns.org as the IP to connect to.
list broadband products with internal dynamicDNS client
other solution:
some broadband NAT/router have internal Dynamic DNS client
check your manual of your broadband router/modem and don't forget to configure [topic=3859][/topic]
spam name => internal dynamic DNS client supported
