I am testing UltraVNC (latest 64-bit version) between two Windows 10 Enterprise 64-bit installations in a domain. The product installs successfully on both machines but I cannot successfully remote from either one to the other.
I found that the installer does NOT create any Windows Firewall rules. I manually added an inbound rule for the server executable for all profiles, IP's, protocols & ports. (By the way, why does it not create a Windows Firewall rule automatically?)
The viewer requests the password, which it accepts, but then displays nothing and closes. No blank screen or anything else. I have the options set at their defaults, and have defined a password. I have tried between other PC's but get the exact same result.
Interestingly, TightVNC works perfectly with a default install, and it automatically creates the correct Windows Firewall rule.
Any ideas as to why UltraVNC is not working? I'd really like to be using this version.

UltraVNC simply won't show remote desktop
Re: UltraVNC simply won't show remote desktop
Hi pauldurham
I took 2 fresh Win 10 64 bit PCs with nothing on them.
Set them both to private network and made sure they could see each other using the windows network browser.
Then I downloaded the latest ultravnc 64 bit from Nov 17 2019
UltraVNC_1_2_30_x64_setup.exe
On one PC I installed only UltraVNC viewer using the defaults.
On the second PC I installed only UltraVNC Server in the default location as well as installing the as a service option.
I then checked the Windows 10 firewall settings. The install created TWO inbound entries in the Windows default firewall for winvnc.exe. I looked at the properties of the entries.. under the advanced tab...Profiles sections... only public had an entry checked... Since I was on a private trusted network... I changed the profile to include all 3 which are Domain, Private and Public. I did this for both of the winvnc.exe entries in the windows 10 firewall on the PC with the server install. (I did nothing on the viewer's PC Windows 10 firewall)
Back at my winvnc server desktop, I right clicked on winvnc down by the system time and chose Admin Properties. For the VNC password I put in pwd and for the view-only password I put in pwd2 then hit apply.
I went to the PC with the viewer installed... opened UltraVNC viewer, typed in the LAN IP address of the winvnc server PC.. and it asked me for the password... I typed in the password pwd and up came the target PC and I had full control including file transfer.. I disconnected. I reconnected but this time when it asked for the password I used pwd2 and connected in view only mode... as it should.
So...This version does work.
A few things to check in order to troubleshoot your situation.
If you are testing in a trusted private network or trusted domain... Can the two computers see each other browsing the network? Once they can.. test ultravnc again.
Another option and if you trust the network the winvnc server is on... temporarily turn off the windows firewall and test connect. If it works, then you know you have a firewall settings issue. Turn the firewall back on and fix the firewall settings. (Look at what I mentioned above.) Then test again.
I hope this helps.

Re: UltraVNC simply won't show remote desktop
Had a very similar issue with new laptops and desktops afer the Windows 10 1909 update. It was working like 2 weeks ago then stopped, did debug logs of server and viewer couldn't figure it out. I then also had issue with some other software and tracked it down to the Visual Studio runtimes. These were HP probooks and elitedesks but I've seen others including Microsoft surface's with problems with the installed runtimes. You can download them here https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... -downloads install them from oldest-newsest 32bit and 64bit, repair install if already on your PC, reboot and continue next install if prompted. I assume UVNC only needs either 2010 at minimum and 2017. There was previously 2015 and 2017 runtimes so its possible they may be installed on your PC from manufacture or other software just install the latest 2015/17/19 package x32/64
