Restarting VNC Server after Explorer crash

Post by lunokhod »

Hi Everybody,

I'm using UltraVNC 1.1.9.3 with the SecureVNCPlugin.dsm 2.3.0.0 plugin.

I'm slowly working through an issue that causes very annoying Windows Explorer crashes while using Cut/Paste to move files around between drives/folders (Win7 64bit)... I believe it is a shell extension that is causing this... but I digress.

After Windows Explorer has crashed and recovered, I find that the UltraVNC service notification icon does not show. The uvnc_service service is still shows as running, but I cannot connect to the machine with UltraVNC Viewer from another machine.

If I restart uvnc_service, the Uvnc icon reappears but I still do not have full functionality. I can connect to the machine with UltraVNC Viewer, I get prompted for my username and password (I use MS Logon)... then the main screen flashes up for a second and then UltraVNC Viewer shuts down. This behavior is the same on my two main Windows 7 machines after a Windows Explorer crash.

What is the best way to restart the UltraVNC service without having to reboot the machine? Should a normal service restart from Computer Management do the trick? I have seen this on previous versions of UltraVNC so I do not think it's related to the latest version.

Michael.

It isn't the service that require a restart, but the winvnc.exe that is running in the desktop.

The taskmanager show 2x winvnc.exe
1 winvnc.exe: service, run in session0
2 winvnc.exe: desktop app, run in the desktop session
Only 2 interact with the desktop, the service only monitor the winvnc.exe.

Try logon as different user, if all is still functional, winvnc.exe is restarted by the service in the new user desktop.
But, it could be that the desktop part is looping... service can't stop and restart it. This would also explain
why a service restart doesn't unlock it.

Sorry, never tested with a crashing explorer.
If i find some time i will do some test while killing the explorer (via taskmgr) possible it behave the same.
