How to stop Ultravnc server screen from blinking on connect

Post by ryeookin2 »

At my work, we're in the process of upgrading from XP to Windows 7 64bit on a slew of machines. When using Ultravnc server v1.0.9.6.2 on XP machine and we connect to it via the Uvnc client, the monitor doesn't blink but when we run uvnc server v1.1.8.3 on a Windows 7 64bit machine and we connect to it via Uvnc it does indeed blink when we connect to it (thus notifying the person or persons in front of their pc that we connected, which we don't want).

I did notice in testing that if we don't use the mirror driver on the Windows 7 machines running uvnc server v1.1.8.3 that it won't blink when a uvnc client connects to it, however that isn't really an option as we need the mirror driver to fix the lag that is caused by typing text on the screen.

A couple of questions:
1) Is this blinking caused by the version of UVNC or by Windows 7?
2) Is there a way to get the benefit of the mirror driver while keeping the screen from blinking?

Thanks for your time.

win 7 use aero by default
win 7 disable aero when a mirror driver is running.

Blinking is changing video mode.
There is not a lot you can do, that's how MS made it.

Hi Rudi,

Thanks for the reply.

So the blinking is due to windows changing the video mode to/from aero?

Well I've tested vnc'ing into a windows 7 64bit machine with it not using aero (set to use Win 7 basic both before and after vnc'ing into it) as well as with it using aero set to use Win 7 Aero both before and after vnc'ing into it) and both times it blinks when connecting via vnc.

I notice that if I have the pc set to use Aero then when I vnc into it I see a dialogue box that says "The color scheme has changed". However I see no such notification if I have the pc set to use windows 7 basic and I connect via vnc (it still blinks though).

Why would aero cause my win 7 64bit machine to still blink in my test above if Aero is disabled both before and after I vnc in (its set to use Win 7 basic)?
