Understanding the ID Number

Post by bakerkr »

I'm trying to wrap my head around some of this stuff and picking it up okay, but I do have one issue I'm trying to understand better. I've modified my compiler.au3 and instantsupport.au3 as described here:
http://forum.ultravnc.info/viewtopic.ph ... a626961ead

This works great, do I need to worry about duplicate ID numbers? Here's my situation:

I connect and run Chunk on a client computer, then do the install as service from taskbar.. when asked for an id, I plan on using their customer number for example 555555. So now for me it's easy to remember, when customer 555555 calls in I will have a log that tells me I've installed InstantSupport as a service so i need to do is run the viewer type in 555555 and I'm good. My question is how do I prevent instantsupport from generating 555555? Is this even a concern?

Not sure if this makes sense or not..

Thanks
Kevin

At this time I don't recommend leaving InstantSupport installed as a service for long periods of time.
If you do choose to do this you may want to modify the generated ID number so that it is not within the scope of your customer numbers.

Why do you not recommend running InstantSupport for long periods? Are there issues or just to prevent ID duplicate issues?

I could have two different viewers, one for my installed customers using 5 digit numbers and another for non-installed customers using 4 digit numbers.

Thanks for the help.

Security, duplicates and there was an issue with some users where the UltraVNC server in InstantSupport would stop making a connection to the repeater after some time.
