First, I want to congratulate the creator of ChunkVNC for making software that works exactly as the instructions say. The viewer and host apps compiled easily and I was able to establish a connection within just a few minutes.
There's problem, though. The resulting remote control experience is so terribly slow as to be useless. I was looking for my CAT modem. For example, when I click on the close box of a remote window two seconds or more pass before I see the window actually close.
The repeater is running on a standalone XP PC at the same location that ran the Instant Support app (although this app was run on a different PC at that location). The Internet connection at this location is 1.5mbps up and 17mbps down.
At my location the upstream speed is 1.2mbps and down is about 10mbps. This is where I ran the Viewer app.
The first oddity I noticed is that the default view of the remote computer is 50% of actual. On one hand, it was nice to see both screens of the dual-screen remote PC on my single monitor but it was way to small to be useable. While I was remoted in I changed the Settings to 100% and then saw the remote PC at full-size on my end. Fixed that!
But... (and this is a big one): is there anything I can do to make the response time of this software be up to today's standards? I use Teamviewer, Logmein, and GotomyPC frequently so I'm accustomed to a remote system "feeling" like it's almost on my LAN. Not so with this ChunkVNC setup, which felt like there's a 2 to 3 second delay between an action I'd take and my seeing the result.
Halp!

First use of ChunkVNC yields a dial-up-like experience
Re: First use of ChunkVNC yields a dial-up-like experience
Thanks, I created ChunkVNC because I started a computer repair business and was in need of a remote support application, glad to see you like it.
It seems you have plenty of bandwidth but that's only half the picture. If possible ping between the two sites to see if anything is causing high latency, for me satellite connections are the worst resulting in many second delays.
The default view auto scales to your screen.
You can change that setting by opening the Viewer\Bin\chunkviewer.ini file and changing AutoScale=1
In my environment I have the repeater running at my shop and ChunkViewer connects to it locally. The only noticeable delay is the latency between InstantSupport and the repeater.
This results in almost realtime speed in most cases.
Keep in mind it may be going slower since you are viewing a dual screen computer so there's a lot of pixels there to deal with.
Try clicking the switch monitor button on the viewer toolbar to only show one screen at a time to see if that helps your speed.
The new UltraVNC server should offer some performance improvements but I haven't had time to put it into the ChunkVNC package.
Maybe if you guys are lucky I'll get a chance to do some programming over Thanksgiving weekend.
Give it a try with some other computers and let me know if you still have the slowness issue, good luck!
