Virus deleted start menu shortcuts

Post by jvoytko »

Hello, I am a computer technician in Southeastern, Ohio. My customer has UltraVNC Win32 Server 1.0.2 Build Jun 17 2006 14:56:09 and, unknown to me, contracted a virus that had blue screened upon boot into normal desktop mode. Safe mode worked fine, went in, removed the viruses, and boot right back into normal windows.

However, all his start menu shortcuts were deleted, I tried the temporary smtmp folder which is nonexistant.

Could anybody provide me with a .zip file with all the standard shortcuts in the start menu?

I do not wish to uninstall this as I do not know what all he is running off of it or the settings he used to set it up. (I'm trying the "Leave no trace" method on this one)

I've went through and done repairs on numerous other applications (UltraVNC is by far not the only application this has happened to)

Thanks very much in advanced to whomever can help me out!! :)

-Jeff

Why can't you do this yourself, on another computer? Or just reinstall UltraVNC on the affected machine?

I believe he is meaning that ALL the start menu programs are missing. I have seen this before with Fake AV malware/viruses.

Admins forgive me if I'm breaking the rules here (I didn't see anything against it in the FAQ's), but I'm going to reference him to another site. It's one that I have used for utilites that can restore the start menus and registry entries that some viruses alter - ie hide all desktop icons or prevent exe's from running anything but the fake AV programs themselves.
I'm not going to link directly but spell it out.

They have instructions and utilitys to fix what you are requesting. Goto that site and you should find what you need to restore provided you haven't deleted the temp files that the fake AV program moved (I'm assuming it was a fake AV since that happened to a client of mine recently). Good luck with it.

No problem with referrals to good sites! Thanks.

I meant that the OP could do what he was asking US to do (create a zip of all default Windows shortcuts) just by using another one of HIS machines, rather than waiting for us to do it.

But bleepingcomputer or Wilders or DSLReports are all great (and better) options.
