Hi,
First off I wanted to say that I really like the new web based forum. Now my issue. I am trying to install UltraVNC on users machines with the MSRC4Plugin configured and selected out of the box. I was able to have it as part of the install package and was able to have it selected in the properties window upon install. Keys are where they are supposed to be on both Viewer and Server machines. But when I try to connect from one machine to another I get an error saying...
"Connection failed - Invalid protocol!
Possible causes:
-You've forgotten to select a DSMPlugin and the Server uses a DSMPlugin
-Viewer and Server are not compatible (they use different RFB protocoles)"
Does anyone know how I can resolve this issue I would really appreciate any kind of help. Thank you for your time.

MSRC4Plugin Nightmare!!!
MSRC4Plugin Nightmare!!!
I'm assuming you are using the plugin feature and have it setup on the server machine.
Did you create a key and then put the key in the same directory on the server machine and viewer machine?
I use the viewers in the office here in listen mode with this command line:
vncviewer.exe /dmsplugin/ msrc4plugin.dsm /listen 5500
hope this helps
Rob

I have figured that portion out...new problem. Ultra VNC creates a registry entry upon install at Software\ORL\WinVNC3 called DSMPlugin. This entry is a binary value and I know that the first part of that value is represents the name of the plugin, but I need to know what the rest of the values represent. If anyone could enlighten me that would be great?

Is the standard user of the computer a restricted/limited user in 2000/XP? I've had issues with the plugin and keys when the currently logged in user is restricted.
Also one thing that helped me real well was to build up one machine exactly as I want as a template. Then Export the registry keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ORL\WinVNC3 as well as HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ORL\WinVNC3.
I then would put the .dsm file and the rc4.key file in C:\Program Files\UltraVNC (wherever yours is works too) then would run the exported .reg files into the registry on the new machine. This configured this machine exactly like the template.
I also use the technique to send updates to the other computers, especially when I find a faster way of controlling the computers through some registry tweak.

Hello guys!
First of all, thank you so much to host a forum! I am really no mailing list guy and this forum maskes asking much easier.
Now for the problem, since I experience very similiar things concerning the "msrc4plugin". I wrote it as an email to the author of the plugin, but unfortunately got no answer yet. Here it goes:
My name is Matthias, I'm from Germany and I try to get UltraVNC running with your DSM plugin. Unfortunately I do have a problem and have to ask you about it.
Bot UltraVNC server and client do run UltraVNC 1.0.0.0 RC 14, both are configured to use your DSM plugin (the most current one AFAIK), both have a 128 bit key and the server has "MS logon" enabled and is installed as a service.
Now I do boot both machines. I sit in front of the viwer machine, start the viewer, try to connect with enabled DSM plugin, but "NO!", the dialog box says I do not have the same DSM plugin or whatnot. If I disable the DSM plugin and connect I get a dialog box for name and password and it works to connect. For demonstration purposes I disconnect again at that point.
Now I do (physicaly) sit in front of the server machine and login there (normal MS login screen). When I am logged in I walk back to my viewer machine, start the UltraVNC client and try to connect, with disabled DSM plugin. But "NO!", dialog box says I have wrong DSM plugin version and whatnot. Then I enable the DSM plugin, connect to the server and -voila- I get the dialog box for name and password. I can connect.
Conclusion: whatever I do, I need to physically sit and front of my UltraVNC server machine and login in there locally at least once before the DSM plugin "works". I guess that is no intended condition. I my case this is inacceptable, since I will bring this server machine to a colocation provider where it won't have mouse, keyboard or monitor attached.
Both machines do run Win2000 with SP4 and latest patches.
I hope you can help me.
Bye,
Matthias / T.T.H.
