Unable to Get Uvnc SC To Work

Post by whitland »

Hi
I would like to use uvnc sc to remotely diagnose the occasional remote customers' pc's. I am far from stupid but cannot get the system to work. I downloaded custom.zip and then amended helpdesk.txt to allow my recently acquired dyndns address to be used. I then zipped it up and created the appropriate file to run on the "server". I installed the "viewer" after having forwarded port 5900 to my localpc. Whatever I do I cannot get a connection.

There are many help docs on this subject but they are mostly confusing and some very badly written. Is it possible for someone to put together a comprehensive guide to settingup SC?

I would very much appreciate help with this project. I have been trying for ten days now. Over to you!!

before SC start and reverse connect to you (and not you connect to partner)
you need
5500 TCP open on your router to computer hosting vncviewer.exe -listen 5500

Why 5900, the example gave 5500 as example for SC !!!!
is normal if you don't follow simple rules !

doc and step by step.

Well I don't know where I got the idea that port 5900 was the one to forward. Anyway SC now works ok. Only trouble is that I have Network Magic controlling the LAN so I am having to turn that off on the pc that I am using as the "viewer" and then enable a static ip. Apparently Network Magic does not support static ip addresses. Can't have everything I suppose! ...unless someone knows different.

in case of dynamic ip, use hostname,
hostname is static except if you change the name

replace the ip of your computer by hostname or

if not possible
reserve the ip to your dhcp server on your router and turn dynamic ip on your pc and dns too.
so your pc have both advantage, dynamic ip reserved with always same ip

Thank you for bearing with me on this one. I Have to admit that I don't follow your most recent suggestions. Please will you explain in detail how I can" replace the ip of my computer by hostname?" Do you mean in helpdesk.txt file because, if so, I have already entered my DynDns address in there but that only relates to the "external" ip address? I cannot see how to use a hostname in order to get around the problem of a static ip on a specific pc on my LAN.

I cannot see how it is possible to "reserve the ip to your dhcp server on your router and turn dynamic ip on your pc and dns too." Possibly my router (Linksys BEFW11S4) does not have that facility.

Sorry to sound confused but hope you are able to help further.

I think your router won't support dynamic dns service provider but this depend of your version of wireless router

BEFW11S4v1
BEFW11S4v2
BEFW11S4v3
BEFW11S4v3.2
BEFW11S4v4

look manual of your wireless router, some basic steps you missed to read or don't want to read maybe ...
http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/linksys
select correct version version of your BEFW11S4

ask someone physical to help you and explain and show you how to set dynamic dns service and set properly your network.
or learning by yourself reading book and trying.

You seem very good at telling me what I need to do but obviously cannot be bothered to explain how. I object to the suggestion that "I don't want to read maybe ... ". I spent several years working as a technical support officer on a telephone help desk dealing with high-end facsimile machines and some customers' problems might take in excess of an hour to clear but I never failed. Then, to be fair, I notice that there are quite a number of complaints about the level of advice on the Uvnc forum.

Just in case you are interested...this is how I have resolved the problem.

How to allocate a static ip address to one pc on a LAN controlled by Cisco Network Magic:

1.I accessed my Linksys router's admin pages. In order to do this I needed to know the "Default Gateway" ip address of my router. This can be found by entering the word ipconfig at a command prompt. I then found out what ip addresses are in the DHCP range. My router is a Linksys BEFW11s4. The "Setup" page shows this information and in my router indicates a range of 192.168.2.100~150.

2.Next I gave a static ip address of 192.168.2.180 to just one pc. To do this I accessed the "Properties" of the pc's network adapter and then the IP4 Internet Protocol "Properties". I selected "Use the following IP Address" and entered an ip address which is outside the above mentioned DHCP range and in my case 192.168.2.180. The subnet mask is automatically provided. The default gateway of the router should then be entered. The "Preferred DNS Server" should be set to the same address as the "Default Gateway". No need to enter anything in the "Alternate DNS Server" field.

3.I rebooted both the router and all pc's on the LAN.

4.I confirmed that the new static ip addresses 192.168.2.180 was active on the pc in question and also that internet access was still available on all systems. Network Magic also still operational.
Job done.

The above process might seem to some to be excessively detailed and simplistic in explanation but then it does answer the question. Knowing the actual technical reason for taking a particular pc outside of the DHCP range process is not required Bear in mind that not everybody has total knowledge of all things pc/networking. It only took me a few minutes to type it out and I can go away happy that, hopefully, most people will benefit from the advice. A lot better than one-liners but then I am not a"SuperMod".
