Cross Platform support with ChunkVNC

Post by mcrbids »

I needed something BONE-HEADED SIMPLE for our end users. Here's what I came up with:

1) I used the standard UVNC installer for windows, and just copied the installed folder to a directory in my home directory.

2) I used NSIS to make an installer for each ID number, and set all the options so it's a single-click.

3) I used the Perl-based ChunkVNC repeater. Works a treat on a spare RHEL 4 server.

4) I have vncviewers set up (also through NSIS) so setting up a support staff computer is done in 1 minute.

5) I also found vncviewers for Linux (for the software devs) that work wonderfully: ssvnc! This should probably be made part of the ChunkVNC installer.

6) Next thing to do: MacOSX support...

All this works invisibly and seamlessly thru the ChunkVNC repeater on a public address, on Windows 2000 forward.

MUCH THANKS to the great work of UltraVNC devs and ChunkVNC!

I'm always a fan of another satisfied user story. :)

Although I appreciate the compliments, you should thank Rudi and the other UltraVNC devs for the best VNC ever and Karl Runge for the most excellent Perl repeater and ssvnc.

These guys have put a tremendous amount of work into their software, I simply package it in a way that's useful for technicians like me. :)

Linux support is possible with the currently available tools, I've just been focusing on Windows for now. It will be included in the ChunkVNC package someday.

It couldn't possible to use InstantSupport with Wine on Linux like TeamViewer did?
I tried to use it, but it said something about UAC and that the screen is locked until remote user will unlock it.
I could see everything, but screen were frozen.

I've never tested in wine but some users have luck.
An alternate viewer would be Karl runge's excellent SSVNC Viewer.
