Accessing 2 different pc's behind a router with Ultravnc

Post by gmd3 »

I am using RC19.5 on an XP Pro pc behind a 4 port Linksys router # BEFSX41 with a static IP and the 5800/5900 ports forwarded towards the LAN IP of this pc
I have another XP Pro pc on a different port behind the same router that I would like to install UltraVNC on
Can anyone tell me if the pc's can be set up in the port forwarding of my router so that both pc's can be readily accessable "all the time" - without having to go into the routers menu and disable one a re-enable the other in the port forwarding section of my router when I want to access either of the pc's remotely
I guess what I need to know is - can Ultravnc be used on ports other than 5800 & 5900 - or possible on a "range" of ports
so I can access 2 diff pc's behind the same router without first having to go into the routers menu and direct any queries on 5800/5900 towards whichever pc I want to access at that time

PS - RC19.5 is working just fine - can anyone tell if there is any benefit to upgrading to the new RC20.5 - other than possible bug fixes
Thanks
gary

Okay, correct be if I'm wrong, but are you simply on a LAN? If so you don't need to direct ports, that's only for traffic on the Internet coming in.

You can change the port by going to the Admin Properties screen, but usually all being set to 5900 on a network if fine.

As for upgrading, I never used anything in between RC18 and 203, then now to 205, so I've only used the latest, but I really love the new features and I would recommend upgrading.

Sir Nigel - I want to connect remotely to the 2 xp pro pc's from out side of the router (without having to tweak the router's port forwarding before accessing either of the pc's)

I will be connecting 'from' behind another linksys router (#BEFSX41) using Ultravnc on an 'xp home' pc

Sorry - I didn't mention that the connection is via the internet with cable modems at each end and of course the routers previously mentioned

Unless you have someone on the remote machine either add you as a client or use the nat2nat connector you have to open ports. Or you can simply use the repeater and that would let you connect to any computer on your network with only one port open. Just install the service and direct port 5901 to the computer on which it's running. Check this out.

You don't even need the repeater. Simply have PC1 listen on port 5900 and PC2 on port 5901. Forward both of those ports using the router configuration pages and then select the appropriate port when you connect using the viewer. BTW, if you're not using the java viewer you don't need port 5800 forwarded.

Yes, also since you are using XP make sure the built in firewall (if you use it) is either disabled or set to allow port 5900 incoming TCP on one computer and port 5901 incoming TCP on the other. By default it allows all outgoing traffic.

I use port forwarding to access 2 different PCs behind a router, but my problem is that the at the W2k login screen the ports go back to their default settings (5900). Once I login, they change to the port numbers I configured them to. Has anyone seen this and know a fix?

If the router supports it, you can forward the erternal port 5901 to port 5900 on PC2. Then both PC's are running similar on the internal net.
