UltraVNC on 64bit Windows

Post by Tier »

Hi,

does anyone have tried to build UltraVNC in a 64bit Windows environment or get it worked on an AMD-64 machine running a 64bit Windows?

Regards,
Tier!

VNC isn't a very processor intensive program. What good would that do?

Also, 64bit systems stil support the 32bit programs.

but not mirror driver still 32bit must be ported to 64bits for working...

edit: UltraVNC staff project new remote control for Windows "Longhorn" wait and see... ;-)

I run a 64bit Athlon 3800+ with 1gb 3200 ddr ram running XP Pro 64bit.

While connected over UltraVNC from a XP Pro 32-bit sp2 machine the processor on my 64bit machine jumps from 12% to 95% utilization. 12% when all I'm doing nothing but watching the task manager. 70%-95% when browsing the start menu or surfing the web.

If UltraVNC could be compiled on and with 64bit drivers I'd imagine this would help, or at least couldn't hurt, and would allow Ultra to run in true 64bit mode, versus using the 32bit emulator.

I got 2 box with Dual Core Opteron with 4gb 3200 ddr ram running XP Pro 64bit, integrated mobo ATI graphic card.
I got 1 box with Xeon with 1Gb ram running 2K3 server, integrated mobo ATI graphic card.
I got plenty other boxes with 2K or XP but with standalone graphic cards (mainly Nvidia).
I'm doing access to all these boxes through DSL line or internal LAN.
-------------------------------
Actually, for the XP64 Opteron, I got the worst response ever seen on a VNC product on a LAN!!! These cpu are Dual Core, so the 64bits (Microsoft?!?!?) system has 4 real cpu to handle threads and jobs, but when connected to the UVNC server, the client is so slow... It's impossible to work correctly. It's not due to the network: meanwhile connecting to uvnc, a standard file transfert (not through uvnc) between client and server takes a correct time on a gigabit network.

In "normal" condition, on a 100Mbs LAN, I have the feeling to be directly on the server machine. So in this case, I'm not able to understand if it is due to XP64 or to integrated ATI card...

On the 2K3 server box, also with integrated ATI card, also on a gigabit network, it is not so slow, but abnormally slow! I mean: on the same network, accessing a XP box with Nvidia graphic card is higly responsive. When connecting on the 2K3 server box, you have to wait a few seconds for each action to be completed.

But I still can't decide if it is due to ATI card and their drivers in itself, or to the fact that these are mobo integrated cards. Cos I also have a box with XP family and a Radeon 9200SE which is higly responsive through a DSL line (I'm able to visualize window's content while moving them!).

On the slow boxes, I've tried with or without the mirror driver, it doesn't change anything, the response's slowness of the actions makes the use impracticable.

If the team could give me some clues. Especially for the XP64 boxes, because these machine are render stations located in the special refrigerated room!!! So, I prefer to manage them from my desk!!!

Thx Mikee
