Impact of reconnects when repeater down

Post by JonD »

If service is installed on a machine... what is is the impact if the repeater is off-line?

I understand that the repeater is set to try reconnects and wondered if this becomes a high usage issue for either the local CPU or the network.

I'm not sure how I can test this.

In my experience the repeater uses a small amount of CPU and memory with only bandwidth being a concern with many active viewer to server connections.

If the repeater goes down InstantSupport will keep trying the connection until it's back up.

Thanks for the reply..

However, it was after the repeater goes down that I was concerned about the impact of the server repeatedly trying to reconnect to a "gone away" repeater.

My repeater shuts down each night and I was concerned that there could be a case where the service was accidentally left active on a remote computer.

It shouldn't do anything but continually try to make a connection back to the repeater, since it's down the connection is closed and it'll try again in a short time.

Keep in mind that it's not recommended at this time to leave InstantSupport installed as a service for a long period of time without a viewer connected. There have been issues with it not reconnecting after some time.

Good luck! :)

So worst case scenario the service stops working?

I have every intention of uninstalling the service !every time!... but you know how that goes:-)

Thanks for the comments. I haven't used the service feature until now so it will be interesting to see how that helps my remote fixes.

Yea the current 1.0.8.2 server that is included in ChunkVNC 3.1 has issues reconnecting to the repeater after a few hours without a viewer connected.
The issue seems to happen less if you drop in the 1.0.8.0 UltraVNC server but it still exists. I'm working on a fix.

Uninstalling InstantSupport when you're done is the best way to go and is what I do.

The only time I install the service is if I need to control UAC prompts in Vista/7 or reboot someones machine.

On a related note...

Can I just go directly to the Program Files\Chunk VNC
to deinstall the service?

I'm thinking of the case where I have installed the service via one login account and I'm working in another account screen. I guess I can always log back to the original screen and use the Uninstall icon there. I'm
assuming that there's nothing special about the desktop link/shortcut.

The ChunkVNC Uninstall shortcut is placed in the All Users\Desktop folder so the link will be visible from any account.
