Dual monitor problems - yep, they're still here

Post by lexa2 »

Good day to all.

Looks like this problem becomes increasingly popular nowdays as companies and users started to switch from old-good single monitor scenario to something more exotic like dual and triple monitor workplaces.

I know that there were some improvements in the latest UltraVNC version (1.8.0.2) and even later there were a special patched version posted on forums (http://www.uvnc.eu/download/winvnc_1083 ... isplay.zip) that fixes some more issues. Still VNC multi monitor troubles remains unfixed, at least at the usage scenario I use.

Here are details.

Server machine is a simple dual-monitor workstation equipped with nVIDIA GeForce 8500 GTS video card running Windows XP using latest WHQL-certified drivers from nVIDIA. Primary monitor is at the right, secondary is on the left (i.e. screen coordinates for the secondary monitor should be below zero). UltraVNC server 1.8.0.2 is installed including the path from forum I had mentioned earlier.

When I connect to this server from linux box using either Grdc, xtightvncviewer, xvnc4viewer or vinarge all I get is the leftmost active monitor displayed. To be more precise: after bootup the workstation displays welcome screen with users selection on the primary monitor, secondary monitor stays turned off. If I connect to the workstation with VNC at this moment and log into the system I result in viewing both secondary and primary displays, but moving mouse on the secondary display leaves traces of data taken from the primary display. If I then disconnect from the server and re-connect to it I result in viewing only secondary (i.e. leftmost active) monitor.

I know that if I would had been using UltraVNC viewer then I would be able to switch between monitors using special "Switch monitor" button at the top toolbar. Unfortunately this button is not available in clients other than the UltraVNC viewer and that makes current version of UltraVNC server useless to me when working with dual-monitor setups. It would be more appropriate if the default behavior of the UltraVNC server were to show "complete desktop" (i.e. both monitors) making linux users happy.

I've been using VNC for years and have always longed for solid multi-monitor support but it's never quite got there. I guess my problem more recently is that I can't use the video hook driver due to performance problems with direct 3D apps. All multi-monitor support seems to have been pulled for any other configuration.

Even if I accept only getting the first display, there is still a bug when the second display is positioned higher than the first (to match the physical layout of the monitors). UVNC seems to make some incorrect assumptions resulting in the mouse pointer being offset by the same amount that the displays are offset. I haven't been able to find any reference to this bug even though it's been around for several releases, so I thought it was finally time to document it here.
