Newbie. need help
Newbie. need help
Installed ultraVNC server, and viewer . Can't get it to connect to internet. have no clue as to what I am supposed to see. Or how to set it up. Can I delete screenshots, history, etc? How on earth do I run this thing? FAQ no help. Need basics here. thanks
Re: Newbie. need help
The server is installed on the machine you wish to control remotely.
The viewer is installed on the machine with which you wish to perform remote viewing/control.
I have no idea what you mean by "can't get it to connect to the Internet".
The viewer and server connect to each other. That can happen across a local network (if the two machines are in the same house or office) or across the Internet (if the two machines are located in different physical places but each place has an available Internet connection). The latter use tends to be more difficult because it usually requires port forwarding at at least one router/firewall.
What exactly are you trying to do? What are you expecting to happen? What do you mean "can I delete screenshots, history, etc."?? This isn't a browser or image capture program; it's a real-time remote control application.
I just noticed this post is in the ChunkVNC forum. If it's actually ChunkVNC you are trying to set up, it's vital that you run the included Repeater on a machine in a location that is accessible by both the viewer and server. The instructions at http://chunkvnc.com are pretty simple.

Re: Newbie. need help
Oh dear, I fear I have posted in the wrong section. thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I am having diff posting a new post, so grabbed this one.
I mentioned 'screenshots' b/c I had seen it on the website. I am trying to connect both in my home, and across the internet.
when I try to 'connect' I get the "failed to connect to server" window. I have put in my IP address, to no avail. I can't get this thing to run at all. Also cannot find basics on the program, what it will/won't do. What I do find is complicated shortcut's that don't help any. I'm looking for the 'how to run for dummies' section....can't find it.
Is the Ultra VCN also a real time remote app? therefore it will not do 'screen captures'? If so, then what do they mean by screenshots on the website? I'm trying to keep an eye on employees, but also be able to assist w layout's for projects while I'm away.
thanks for your help. I've been trying to figure this out for awhile now...If I'm in the wrong place, please redirect me.

Re: Newbie. need help
I just checked the main and Features pages of the web site and don't see anything about screen capture, so I'm not sure what you saw.
Maybe you were looking at a banner ad (for a different product) that happens to be on the ultravnc.info site? Please remember that UltraVNC is open source and distributed free of charge, and that there are also ads for 3rd party products on the web site.
That said, you could always hit "PrintScreen" while viewing a VNC session in a window.
Honestly, it might be that you don't have the technical grasp necessary to install this software and make it do what you want it to do. Unfortunately it's not, in my opinion, quite at the "for dummies' stage yet; believe me I wish it were. (The ChunkVNC project is a step in that direction, but one still needs to understand where to put the repeater, port forwarding, etc.)
I suggest you look into GoToMyPC.com and LogMeIn.com for commercial solutions. They are fairly easy to deploy.

Re: Newbie. need help
That may have been where I saw the screen shots. I know I am not real 'techy' but I think I could figure it out if I could find the documentation on how to do it. I did find a 'step by step' in the FAQ, but it just opened up a blank page.
Does the ChunkVNC work w Ultra? If I have chunk, and the remote pc has ultra, will they work together? Or no.
Thanks again.

Re: Newbie. need help
But there's no one "how-to" because each person is choosing to do different things in different ways. I want multiple remote users to be able to connect to their office PCs. Another person wants to be able to roam and connect back in to perform support to different people in different offices. Some people can run with a repeater and some can't. Some people want full time remote control to a fixed location. You want to log, screen capture, and occasionally provide remote assistance. Some people care more about security than others.
You can't always assume "this product will do exactly what I'm thinking I want, and someone must have already figured out exactly how to do what I want and prepared a how-to on it".
Often that is the case, but not always. A lot of times we are on our own.
That said, UltraVNC's documentation is generally acknowledged to be subpar, and there are plans to fix it.
Is the step-by-step you mentioned the FAQ "Ultra VNC Step by Step Documents in document and PDF Format" at [topic=5890][/topic] ?
I am able to click through to those PDFs at the moment....
Yes, for the most part ChunkVNC interoperates with UltraVNC because ChunkVNC is UltraVNC with a script wraparound. It's just a convenient "single click" way of deploying the UltraVNC server, viewer, repeater, and DSM security plugin.
