Can't uninstall properly (Windows 7)

Post by ibuilder »

Hi,

I just downloaded UltraVNC - at first I went for the "X64 bins" and run the exe it had and ended up with the admin properties window jumping on me endlessly. I killed the service when I finally found it.

Confused for the lack of installer, I went and downloaded the other package, X64 Full, and installed that. Installation went fine, but after restart nothing seems to really work - my firewall stopped working, connections to (some, not all!) web sites don't work and Aero is gone.

I uninstalled UltraVNC, but the problems persisted even after restart. I suspect the first "installation" is somehow still causing this? How do I get rid of that?

Thanks!

Anyone?

It seems like majority of my services are down - there's only 9 services running.

This is a rather leisurely paced BBS - you posted only an hour after your initial post, so it's not surprising that no one had answered yet.

(I tend to post a lot more frequently than most but I have no advice for you.)

You might want to check back tomorrow.

Ok, thanks for the reply anyway

I started putting the services back on one by one... at least Aero is back now (desktop looks normal again), but there's still a bunch or problems. I have never seen anything like this happen before, strange!

Do a system restore to a previous date.

I would, but I don't have one

But I found one site that lists the default services for all Windows 7 variants - I tried to follow that to switch on all the necessary services.

It seems to have worked. I'm running a virus scan now, because my firewall failed in the first couple of restarts - I'll see after that if I actually got it fixed.

Weird problems... I think you should test the hard drive and memory on that computer for problems.

Ok,

everything seems to be back to normal. I boldly went and reinstalled UltraVNC and nothing got broken this time. It now works nicely from my laptop.

The server has had no major problems in the past and it's under heavy rendering use almost every day. I must have messed up something in the first attempt to install UltraVNC.
