Currently we are using SC to remotely connect to our users. We have a static ip in the office with several computers on the network. To determine which specific computer on our network in needing to receive the remote connection we designated certain ports for each station. (173.132.245.23:5500)
If I'm correct, we our users launch vnc they are the servers and we are the listeners that accept the remote connection to view their computer. Is there a way to accomplish this using a public hot spot? How would we be designated among all other connections at like a Starbucks, Panera Bread, etc.? Is there any way to handle this?
Our connections via SC work great locally but if we needed to be out of town for support then not so much. Also, SC is so small it works great for a quick download/no install connection.
We looked at DynDNS but I'm not sure that's the right direction for us to head.
Thanks for any help. It is greatly appreciated.

Re: Single-click use from a public hotspot
as far as i know this is not possible cos sc is a re-configured server
the possibility maybe is to login to a server(workstation) inside the company with the laptop.
then u make the people connect to the same workstation, that listens so connection :
laptop(@startbucks)
> remote to ur compony(internal pc)
support:
problem pc > ur compony(same internal pc).
it wont be fast, cos ur using a remote session in a remote session, but u can try it.

Re: Single-click use from a public hotspot
I considered this. Sort of like a connection within a connection which would appear as if I never left the office.
For me to have full/unlimited access to my work computer and be able to connect freely I would need to have ultravnc server install on each end? (my laptop and work destop?)

Re: Single-click use from a public hotspot
not sure why that just happened
Re: Single-click use from a public hotspot
Sorry, I'm completely confused as to what the problem is here. Why would a hotspot act differently from any other routed or proxied connection?
That is, once the user connects and, if necessary, authenticates with the hot spot, he or she should be able to connect to your listening, port-forwarded clients as normal.
Unless we're talking about a proxy issue?
For serious proxy issues there's a ChunkVNC mod (using stunnel) that should help.

Re: Single-click use from a public hotspot
Because at work/home we have designated port forwarding for each computer. As described above, when a user launches vnc they are presented with a list of our computers to connect to. The technical details behind each option determines which computer of ours they will be connecting to.
So, the vnc first uses our public ip to locate our office. Then is uses the port number we have assigned internally on our router for a particular computer. Our router has my internal ip as something like 10.1.10.45 and we then port forward a specific port for that internal ip address. So when a connection comes in through vnc it knows that I'm port 5800 for example.

Re: Single-click use from a public hotspot
Right, and that's how it always works. (Though I thought when you said "w are the listeners" you meant you were doing reverse VNC connections to allow users in the office to control the roaming laptops. But it doesn't matter; port forwarding is port forwarding.)
My point was that a public hot spot should pose no different challenge than connecting from someone's home network. If it works through your home router, it should work through the hotspot. Does it?

Re: Single-click use from a public hotspot
If I'm understanding you correctly I don't believe so.
Our clients (customers) use a remote tool with predefined ip addresses and port numbers to connect to us remotely. This is set within our router in the office. At a public hot spot we would be assigned an ip when connecting which would not be similar to our office ip that is used and port forwarded for vnc use.
So, we're trying to figure out a way to jump onto a various hot spot and somehow allow our customers to connect to us using vnc.

Re: Single-click use from a public hotspot
Oh oh oh! I finally understand. You, the people normally in the office, are wishing to roam, and yet still have your customers connect to you. In other words, the actual office becomes irrelevant in this scenario.
You wish to have remote customers connect to you as it will be you that is working off of a hotspot, one you don't control.
So the answer is no, your customers can't connect directly to you, unless there's a 3rd machine in the mix to relay or repeat. I suggest you use something like ChunkVNC - it is intended as an SC workalike, and it also bundles an UltraVNC Repeater -- you run the repeater on a third machine that is publicly accessible, and both you AND your remote customers connect to that repeater.
In your case you'd just leave the repeater running in your office and make sure a port was forwarded to it. And yes the repeater can run on the same machine as an UltraVNC server or client. Good luck!
