VNC behind a US Robotics Router

Post by Etali »

Please forgive me if this seems like an obvious question, but I'm trying to get Ultra VNC working on three machines that are behind the router so that I can connect to them while I'm away from home.

I thought it would be as easy as setting up each machines Ultra VNC server to run on a different port, then setting up the router to forward those ports, but the router doesn't seem to have very good options for that.

All it has is the option to either put the machines in the DMZ (which I'm guessing would work but rather defies the point of being behind a router?) or, a 'Special Applications' section, which requires a Trigger port (outgoing) then the incoming ports to forward. I think that's the option I should be using, but I'm not sure what to list as the trigger port.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks.

what kind of USR router do you have?

Does it have a port forwarding section? or maybe Virtual server section? Those are areas you have to specify ports for each server

E.g.

Computer 1 - 5900
Computer 2 - 5901
Computer 3 - 5902

Now if the USR router also has a firewall you must also specify the ports to be exempt from this firewall rule.

On each computer themselves you must enable the port you are specifying so that the XP SP2 firewall or any firewall isnt blocking that port. From that point you can run the server - granted specifying the ports on the server - and you are good to go.

Hope this helps.
