Possible to have a virtual monitor?

Post by mikej_w »

on windows (XP or 7):

On the server the monitor is quite large (2 monitors, each 1680 x 1040).
On typical client, 1 monitor, 1024 x 768.

Is it possible to make the server think that there is a smaller desktop, so that the client sees the whole (reduced size) desktop? Scrolling isn't working too well for me, and applications often start outside of the client's viewport.

On the VNC viewer connection window, have you tried turning on Auto Scaling (Checkbox at the bottom of the connection methods)? Not sure how well it would work on a 2-monitor setup, but it works going from my HTPC to my netbook.

Thanks. yeah, I knew about being able to do that. I need an actually smaller desktop - everything on your host, scaled down is really small. I can scroll, but then when you launch a program, you have to hunt it down to see it.

I guess this just isn't a possibility right now. OK on linux though.

Maybe I missed your actual point, but can't you just change the screen resolution on the server PC before, or after, attaching to it?

Is it that you want to do that in a more automated way?

Yes - that would do the job, if I could greatly reduce the screen resolution on connection. I'll play around with that soon, and see how that works. I just changed host machines, and it will take a few days to get VNC server set up on my new win7 machine.

Thanks for the suggestion, it is a good one.

Of course automating this would be awesome. If someone pursues this, I would automate turning off the second monitor at the same time.

Again, thanks, I'll get back to this shortly.

Maybe a batch file with one of these utilities, followed by vncviewer.exe with appropriate command line parameters....

Although it seems there should be an easier way!
