It's free, but I'm afraid its going down hill...

Post by mrpush »

Hi,

I have used various version of this VNC software over a few years and am greatfull for it. Thank you.

However, its successive versions are getting really bad.

I'd say it's like getting used to a washing machine, and then later going back to washing cloths by hand.

The earily 1.XX versions had a nice little GUI window that would allow changing settings and you could access it by the tray icon or by putting a "C:\......-defaultsettings" line in a a comand prompt if you installed in hidden mode.

Since, the software has gone the other direction. Who wants to fumble through an ini file and hunt and peck to change settings? (I used to have to do that back int he 80's when it was status quo)

Where has the password encryption gone?

Do people want to change setting with a FORM or look thorugh a bunch of lines of code like text?

Should I have to set permissions on a file to keep people out or maybe just password protect the file so that it can't be accessed except from the app?

Is password encryption not a STANDARD these days with all the ongoing issues?

I'm sure there are some reasons for these thing that I don't understand, but I just don't get it. Software is supposed to make life easy, no?

This software in my oppinion is not getting easier to use, its getting more cumbersone. :|

What does everyone else think?

Thanks much,

MP

majority after vote want setting by file not trough registry

linux and mac use file and security, not registry whrere is more complicate to manage than a single file of settings.
this applied now for windows 2008/vista, 7
UltraVNC 1.0.9.6.1 (built 20110518)
OS Win: xp home + vista business + 7 home
only experienced user, not developer

its interesting this came up, ive had a few thoughts of my own about this.

sorry to the topic starter but i dont understand what you mean when you talk about editing INI files, if you look at it like that, were you NOT restricted to editing reg values? do we not have a GUI? and arnt password encrypted with the plugin?, but i do agree with "It's free, but I'm afraid its going down hill..." so thats what ill speak about

the program has a lack of consistancy, for example we have this new external settings GUI, looks very nice, but is it complete? i dont belive its all together, and the old built in settings dialog still exists, however thats not complete and its 2 seperate GUIs, for a total of 3 settings GUIs.

that just serves as an example, im not advanced enough of a programer to know whats under the hood here, but what i do know is that establishing a clear and consistant method of usage is key, and when you do plan to add change or remove something key, it should be carefully planed, completed, and doumented before its implemented with consideration for previouse and future versions.

one other example is documentation on command line switches related to the server, i see commands that dont work anymore but dont explain why or what the alternative is and ones that dont explain how strict the usage is and how to use them during what circumstances.

these forums seem dead almost at times, and the things i do see are people asking questions about things like removed or undocumented features like "how do i uninstall a the uvnc service from command line?" and sometimes getting answers like this: " http://www.uvnc.com/install/cmdline.html "

well that would be wrong

i really do love UVNC and am very greatfull to those who work on it, i hope this can be taken only as constructive critisim
