Just don't understand how to connect away from home...

Post by sherifffruitfly »

<sigh>

My ultravnc server is at home behind a linksys wireless-g router, which is fed from a cable modem with dynamic ip from my inet provider.

I fwd the ultracvnc port(s) to my computer.

I find my external ip via whatismyip.com.

Then I try to connect with my laptop with http://myip:port#.

I do this from within my own home, just to test, and from the coffee shop down the road.

I always get a page not found, or cannot display page 404-type error.

Am I leaving out some essential step in this?

Sweartagod I've looked around these parts for answers, but I guess I'm the idiot of the group... no one else seems to have this kind of problem... :(

Thanks for any insights,

cdj

I find my external ip via whatismyip.com
you can't use this step on your laptop at coffee shop !
why ? You can see only your WAN adress of your local computer at coffee shop and not IP adress at your home !

Better to use and configure service on http://www.dyndns.org and add your personal hostname from your choice !
and later ...activate service on your Linksys for use it with your laptop
and so easy to remember than IP address !

so this step is done

exemple: from your laptop

with web browser with only Sun Java JRE 1.4.x_yy)
you can use url:
http://myhost.dyndns.org:5800 <-- your port from web navigator

or

classical Ultr@VNC viewer
myhost.dyndns.org (default service 5900 port TCP without any information)

Ultr@VNC with web browser use 2 ports 5800 TCP + 5900 TCP
(UltraVNC based on RealVNC 3.3.x)
[realVNC 4.0 need only one port 5900 TCP for webviewer + uvnc viewer)
UltraVNC 1.0.9.6.1 (built 20110518)
OS Win: xp home + vista business + 7 home
only experienced user, not developer

I meant that I would put in the results of whatismyip - not the local network 192.168.what.ever business... lol - but obviously my understanding of networking technologies is somewhat lacking...

>Better to use and configure service on >http://www.dyndns.org and add your personal hostname from >your choice !

Ok, I've done this...

>and later ...activate service on your Linksys for use it with >your laptop

I have no idea what this means. Can you explain?

>with web browser with only Sun Java JRE 1.4.x_yy)

I get the same page not found error I've always gotten. I assume there's something else I have to setup on my router?

btw - I don't mean to be wasting anyone's time - if there's a step-by-step page somewhere, feel free to just show me the link....

But thanks for the time you've already taken...

And fwiw, here's the router I have:

$#%$#@%!!

Ok, I got the dyndns business working - I think - when i go to ###.dyndns.org, I get my router's setup screen - that sounds like wut's supposed to happen...

But when i try to go to a port (5800), i get the same ol page can't be found crap....

I sweartagod that the ports are fwded to the server computer, and that the service is running on it.

GAH!!!

so frustrating...

firefox viewer on notebook (example)
http://myhost.dyndns.org:5800 -->

home router w/NAT 192.168.1.1: -->
if you see home page router, it's mean, your forgot :5800 forgot too to redirect on 192.168.1.2:5800 (your computer at home with winvnc)

home server winvnc 192.168.1.2:5800 (with Sun JRE activated)
show your home computer display on your notebook if ok !

if you have a firewall, don't forget to open service 5800 TCP port LAN --> WAN and WAN --> LAN

p.s.
your link of linksys was broken ! sorry, i don't now your model.

tested with RC18 and RC19.4 successfully ! (without firewall but only NAT filter)

My router is the linksys WRT54GS - sorry about the link - it works fine for me...

>if you see home page router, it's mean, your forgot :5800 >forgot too to redirect on 192.168.1.2:5800 (your computer at >home with winvnc)

Not sure what this means. I have 5800 forwarded to my server, if that's what you mean.

I've got sun java installed - I can use ultravnc via it's web interface over the local network.

>home server winvnc 192.168.1.2:5800 (with Sun JRE >activated)
>show your home computer display on your notebook if ok !

http://lanIP:5800 works just fine. http://dyndnsIP:5800 doesn't work at all.

>if you have a firewall, don't forget to open service 5800 TCP >port LAN --> WAN and WAN --> LAN

I'm sorry - I don't know what this means either. I typically have the router's firewall running, as well as Norton Internet security on all my computers.

please read manual at page 64 for clearly explanation
ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pdf/wrt54gs_ug.pdf

webVNC 5800 TCP + winvnc 5900 port must be opened for remote control from notebook with web browser on hostvnc at your home!

8. I need to set up online game hosting or use other Internet applications.
If you want to play online games or use Internet applications, most will work without doing any port
forwarding or DMZ hosting. There may be cases when you want to host an online game or Internet
application. This would require you to set up the Router to deliver incoming packets or data to a specific
computer. This also applies to the Internet applications you are using. The best way to get the information on
what port services to use is to go to the website of the online game or application you want to use. Follow
these steps to set up online game hosting or use a certain Internet application:
1. Access the Router’s web interface by going to http://192.168.1.1 or the IP address of the Router. Go to
the Applications & Gaming => Port Forwarding tab.
2. Enter any name you want to use for the Customized Application.
3. Enter the External Port range of the service you are using. For example, if you want to host Unreal
Tournament (UT), you would enter the range 7777 to 27900.
4. Check the protocol you will be using, TCP and/or UDP.
5. Enter the IP address of the PC or network device that you want the port server to go to. For example,
if the web server’s Ethernet adapter IP address is 192.168.1.100, you would enter 100 in the field
provided. Check “Appendix E: Finding the MAC Address and IP Address for Your Ethernet Adapter” for
details on getting an IP address.
6. Check the Enable option for the port services you want to use. Consider the example below:

Code: Select all

Application	Start	End	Protocol	IP Address	Enabled
webvnc 5800	5800 TCP	192.168.1.2	X
winvnc 5900	5900 TCP	192.168.1.2	X
9.
I can’t get the Internet game, server, or application to work.
If you are having difficulties getting any Internet game, server, or application to function properly, consider
exposing one PC to the Internet using DeMilitarized Zone (DMZ) hosting. This option is available when an
application requires too many ports or when you are not sure which port services to use. Make sure you
disable all the forwarding entries if you want to successfully use DMZ hosting, since forwarding has priority
over DMZ hosting. (In other words, data that enters the Router will be checked first by the forwarding settings.
If the port number that the data enters from does not have port forwarding, then the Router will send the data
to whichever PC or network device you set for DMZ hosting.)

I understand all that you point out within the linksys manual.

I'm pretty sure I already said that the ports are forwarded properly (you don't seem to believe me - is there a way to include a screenshot?).

thanks anyway...

maybe, you have 3 firewall ? :|

1. Linksys WRTG54GS
2. Symantec Norton Internet Security 200x
3a. firewall on network card if Windows XP SP1 or Win2k sp4
or
3b. Windows Firewall if Windows XP SP2 (deactivated if you use NIS2004 or higher)

I don't think anything ! I just try to find any error on configuration.

we don't have any basic information for better help !

We don't know OS and ServicePack if used?
we dont' know ultravnc server RC and build ?
we don't know if ultravnc used as Service or application ?

Yup - Windows firewall is turned off...

Sigh - it's some stupid setting somewhere - I can feel it...

Didn't include below info earlier only because I didn't think it was especially relevant... here ya go...

>We don't know OS and ServicePack if used?

XP Pro SP2

>we dont' know ultravnc server RC and build ?

Ultr@VNC Win32 Server v1.0.0 RC 18
Build Jun 20 2004 20:45:25

Viewer is essentially the same info - only the time differs: 20:33:15

woohoo! got it working!

Turns out a setting on my router's firewall was the problem. It's the one called "Filter Internet NAT Redirection". Turned that off, kept all the other options on, and can connect just fine.

Thanks for the suggestions and advice all!

Now if only i could get file transfer going... It says it's on on the server properties sheet, but I don't see an option for it anywhere in the java applet window....

hm.....
