Local connection = OK, Remote Connect = No Go

Post by ywellc »

I recently installed a UVNC server on a computer at my office. Testing has confirmed that the server is up and running and can be connected to from local machines.

I have forwarded incoming connections on my router on ports 5800 and 5900 to the computer hosting the server. I have a dyndns updater so it is a pseudo-static IP. Port scanning via the internet has shown both the http port (5800) and the VNC viewer port (5900) are properly open.

When I attempt to connect to the server from the outside (via web browser) I am not prompted for the vnc password and the screen remains blank, though the tab lists the "page title" as the machine name of the server (which lead me to believe it is finding the machine on the other side of the router). I also tried the same setup with a TightVNC, to the same result, with the exception of course that instead of a completely blank page with the machine name title, I get no prompt for a vnc password and a link to tightvnc.com (this is usually shown below the vnc session window, once it has been open).

I am extremely frustrated as I have never had a problem like this setting up a VNC server / client before. I was using a friends computer to access the server via the internet and did not want to dl a vnc viewer on his computer, which is why my testing was limited to the http connection.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

java viewer does not suppoort rc4.key and dsm plugin via port 5800 if enabled thats what you get nothing.

to use java viewer must disable dsm and rc4.key.

suggest connect using viewer 5900 and it will support dsm and rc4 key ok.

I tried and did successfully connect last night from my home machine (using xtightvncviewer on Ubuntu). I double checked this morning and as I expected the plugin was already disabled. I do not see any setting for the RC4.key in my configuration.

It seems like the Java applet just isn't launching properly for some reason. It will even say "applet loading" from Firefox on my home setup, pause for some time, then display "done" but there is no password auth. prompt and only the same blank screen as described above.

Thanks for the look though!

using a viewer is different then using java via FF or IE just the fact that jave viewer does not support encryption si enough for prompt not to come up.

dsm checked on server java not ok rc4 key though you may not see iy its there by default on server install path its just a exchange of encryption between server and viwer to encrypt connection.

invariably you need to disable dsm which then wont use the key.

if encripted connection is needed must use viewer and rc4.key must be same on both sides viewer & server.

If you dont have dsm enambled and still cant log in with FF or IE then I dont know it works fine here lan/wan.

maybe you can start enable logging to see whats going on...

You can use VPN software, like NeoRouter (http://www.neorouter.com) to create a virtual LAN that including your computers at home and outside, then use VNC. If you don't want to install or you don't have permission to install the software, you can simply download and run NeoRouter Portable version to remote access your home PC.

Good luck
