help using the vnc?

Post by mschroe919 »

we have used this program before and can use it a little now. Here is what we can do... my brother can get into my pc by using his viewer and my server up. But I can't get into his? Yet if I put up my listener vnc he can invite me to get into his and that works, why can't I just do it by using my regular vnc viewer and him having his server up.? I can get into anothers pc but not his...We thought that it might have been his firewall...but for a moment he disabled it. Still not getting in. He has dsl and I have cable modem. When we first installed these we were able to do it. Please help.

Guess some basic questions are in order -

Which version of UltraVNC are you using?
Have you re-checked his Port forwarding for his server?
What OS are you using?
If XP is his XP SP2?

If you havent checked his port forwarding for his router what it sounds like is that he has to initiate a connection out - to your listener- which in turn opens the port back to his computer from his router. This in turn allows you to connect to him.

If he doesnt have a router then if he has XP with SP2 or SP1 there is an internal firewall on the OS. This has automatically turned on with SP2, thats why I ask if its SP2, which seems to have issues with some apps like this one.

Thanks for the reply by golly you were right as far as the ports weren't open in my pc so now the 5900 and 5800 ports are okay. So I will try it tonight with my brother and let you know. I used this site to determin if ports were open or closed....
