automate patching of windows updates over ultravnc

Post by nobody3 »

i have a number of computers to manage ( ie to patch ( Windows and Office Patches) , updates and clean (if there are viruses) )

now for most of the work i know there are various options like SBS, SMS or SUS but all of these wont do virus cleaning if the computer gets infected and i need ultravnc to get rid of viruses ( spyware toolbars our users install and other malware stuff like that bots, viruses (* see below for why the computers are not locked down) )

i have been using ultravnc file transfer feature to transfer the required updates and clean pcs at the same time

it would be very nice if the file transfer could be automated

let me explain this in detail :

1st computer has windows XP installed in D:\Windows
2nd has windows 2000 installed in c:\Windows
and so on

now if i could specify on command line login to computer one and dump all the files needed to for the update on desktop of each computer and then run that updates from that location and delete if required or run a command line bath file that do the update and delete the files required for the update.

that would be a great boon for all the computer administrators everywhere

( the management decided that too much security was hampering users from doing productive stuff so they decreed that admins allow net access and just install firewall, also allow the users to install software programs, as we have site licenses for all the software programs we use that is not a problem, i need to get around writing a software inventory and "lock down workstation" script and make a presentation to the management how both of them would save the org quite a nice wad of cash in the long run)

just install firewall == install firewall and antivirus + HIPS its something all rolled into one. its kaspersky internet security 2009 and you cannot control it with ultravnc or for anyvnc for that matter. but from the setting that i have made it just cleans up any viruses and deletes all their traces.

the fun fact : kaspersky deletes ultravnc, you need to enable detection of other programs manually which includes ultravnc and commercial keyloggers

( i had to manually add ultravnc to kaspersky's exclusions and after that we never had any problems )

somehow this works perfectly without bothering out users too much in what they are doing.
