Vista and msrc4plugin.dsm

Post by danielberry »

Hi Guys

I am having problems with the msrc4plugin.dsm plugin on one of my pc's.
I have it working on 4 others but i just cant get it to work on this one.
it is vista SP1 with all current ms updates

I have a vnc single click file.
and when the client runs it to this pc i get the error message

Connection Failed - Error reading Protocol Version

Possible causes:

- You've forgotten to select a DSMPlugin and the Server uses a DSM Plugin
- The selected DSM Plugin is not compatible with the one running on the Server
-The selected DDMPlugin is not correctly configured (also possibly on the server)
- The password you've possibly entered is incorrect

i have checked the plugin versions they are the same on both ends
i have the same key file at both ends
i have uninstalled and reinstalled ultravnc
i am using the same version of ultravnc on other computers
have tried from a few clients that work fine to my other pc's
the user is a local administrator and has full access to the c:\program files\ultravnc\ directory and sub directorys
i tried setting up a vnc server on one pc and trying to view it it does the same thing

the other thing that is interesting is that if i try to create a new encription key i get the error message

an unrecoverable error occurred

GenerateKey Failed

Thanks in advance for any help you can give

Daniel

I may have found the answer VNCviewer was working fine on my comp with vista hp then i upgraded to ultimate and then no dice with VNC after some messing i got it to work buy right clicking and going to properties on VNCviewer, from there under the compatibility tab I told it to run as win xp sp2 and low and behold it is working again. might want to give it a try.

Wow.
This is 100% confirmed XP Compatibility mode is required.
Actually it's worse than this.
I can use encryption and compatibility mode to connect, only sometimes, with

XP Listening to Vista Serving
NOT
Vista Listening to XP Serving

Been tearing my hair out for awhile, making things run in XP compatibility mode and trying them I can't really get consistent results either.
So VERY good information, definately put me on the right track: Stoping the use of encryption! But I had some connection issues with non Vista users, so now to try XP compatibility mode and see if i can now connect to them!

Why need run vncviewer with msrc4plugin.dsm need run as administrator for work on vista ?
(until fix: work around: compatibility mode xp sp2)

Image

or

(until fix: work around: run as administrator)

Image

shortcut commande line:
"C:\Program Files\UltraVNC\vncviewer.exe" -dsmplugin msrc4plugin.dsm -listen 5500

security issue:
This must work as user level without administrator privilege.
actuall not possible with vncviewer 1.0.5.4 on vista/win7

without run as administrator
as soon a connection is made...
error Plugin Loading:
The Plugin cannot be loaded.
Please check its name integrity

as well, restarting remote windows, crash local vncviewer 1.0.5.4

------------

without dsmplugin,
vncviewer listen without run as administrator is ok
winvnc initiate connection to viewer, ok
