Does RC18 speed increases apply to win 95/98?

Post by Billmac »

I am responsible for a 200+ computer environment that is 98% Win 95/98. We currently run RC11d on every PC. I tried RC18 on a win xp machine (one of the very few) I was deploying and it seemed to speed up quite a bit. However when I tried upgrading one of my win 95 machines it did not seem to make a difference. Could I get some input on whether I should upgrade. If I will see a drastic improvement then I am all for it. However If not then I would rather avoid visiting 200+ computers. Thanks for the help

Have you installed the Video Driver on the XP server ?

Because the big speed boost between RC11d and RC18 is mainly noticeable when using the driver... which is not available under 95/98...

But the PollFullscreen method (used when no driver is activated on the server) has also been optimized in RC18. The speed boost is noticeable over LAN when scrolling windows or when some parts of the screen change fast (screen saver preview for instance).

The overall RC18 speedup also comes with a CPU load reduced, with or without Video Driver.

To sum up: if you don't see a big speed/CPU difference under 95/98 don't waste your time on upgrading 200 machines...

TEST19 will make a difference.

The ddihook method for 9.x was disabled in previous versions,
bad OS detection.

Perhaps you could try it on 1 PC..

Install RC18 (check if also the ddihook.dll and 16bithelp.exe are installed)
Download latest winvnc.exe and vncviewer.exe and overwrite
the files in the RC18 installation. (dl.ultravnc.net)

RC19 or perhaps Rel1.00 :) will be out around the year end.

Thanks

I think I will wait for Rel 1.00 and give it a try then.
