Change port for Java Viewer ?

Post by Rainer11163 »

Okay, this one's a bit tricky, but maybe it is possible.

I want to remote control my home pc with UltraVNC from the office. Problem is, that it's not allowed for users at the office to install software. I thought it can be done with IE6 oder Firefox.

Next problem is, that most ports are closed, so I had to change UltraVNC to listen on port 443 (normally, this is the port for https).

Now this: It's possible to fire up IE or Firefox and connect to my pc at home, but after I log-in I get the error message: "Network error: could not connect to server: < pc at home >: 5900".

Well, what's this? Why does the Java viewer try to use port 5900??? Can I change it to port 443? But how ???

if you're using ie or firefox at the office, then the java viewer, as part of your browser, need not have any special ports opened.

your vnc server at home listens on port 5800 for your java connections, hence, your browser should be pointed to:

http://yourhomepcip:5800

essentially, you could change your java settings on your home vnc server, but you don't need to.

is this what you are doing?

more info may be needed - os, internet connection type, router/firewalls, etc.

also, since ultavnc has numerous beta releases, it may be wise to completely uninstall all versions and remnants, then reinstall cleanly.
