Error Message When Trying to Run Server [SOLVED]

Post by photoman »

I came across PcHelpWare yesterday when looking for a small remote access program to help someone who is still on dialup. I downloaded the program and generated the server exe. I then emailed the file to them as a zip file. They unzipped it to their desktop and ran it. At this point, it dispayed a error message with the text 'Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.'

I generated the exe from a Windows XP machine and my friends PC is also Windows XP. To ensure that the file I sent wasn't corrupt, I downloaded the file from my sent items to my laptop, extracted it and ran it. It worked perfectly.

Any suggestions on what is causing the error message, and how it can be fixed? Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Never thought of that. I downloaded the same file to my work laptop and it runs fine, so I will get back to him about the limited account.

Having said that, does that not mean that it won't work on the vast majority of PCs in an organisation, as most organisations will not give their users admin rights.

We're a small team of three support staff who cover support for customers ranging from single person companies to big organisations with literally hundreds of users. For the single user company, their will more than likely have admin rights, but from experience, know that the IT people in the larger organisations tie the PCs down, and that will include excluding admin rights.

When PHW-server is running, it will create a folder "temp_phw" at root folder of c: drive.
If the pc does't have the C: drive, or the user doesn't have the right to create that folder. You may see this error too.

Problem sorted. File somehow got corrupted when he downloaded it. He tried again, from the same email I sent, and it worked fine.
