Can't get server password to stick

Post by OldNick »

RC18 Win98

I enter a password in the Server User box, and then close the dialog box. When I open it again, the password has reverted to default.

This used to work on this machine. I uninstalled and reinstalled UVNC, and lost the sticky password.

I have tried installing as a service and not as a service, but it does not help. I have also made sure that all references to VNC were removed from the Registry, and also when uninstalling, made sure everything was removed from the Win File System. The uninstall missed a heap of references.

On another machine, it would stick until I shut down and restarted WinVNC, then it also was lost. Again, it used to work, but seems to have become broken somehow.

Out of interest I tried TightVNC, and the same problem occurred. So it appear5s to be a WinVNC thing, as this is common to both, AFAIK.

Is the password stored anywhere accessible? Why is it not sticking? Anyone know?

Thanks for any help.

hmmm....ooookaaay.

I will modify my description of the problem.

The password I type in works, but does not show in the Current User Properties box correctly.

I tested it using a loopback, to get the "mirroring" screens by connecting to my own machine. The password I entered allowed me to connect. typing in a wrong password (say, "fred") would _not_ allow me to connect.

So the problem is not the password but what the User Properties _thinks_ is the password. It shows the default all the time.

So. Any ideas, folks?

How do you know the password is not shown correct.

The password box always show 8 *,
hiding the password length.

I would have let this go, but I resent the "um" bit.

In my original post, I stated the version, the Win version, and also that I had not only uninstalled and reinstalled, but that I had cleaned out the registry and files for VNC.
