Can you test on a headless that give a black screen.
Whne ddengine fail to init, is now answer false and blit is used.
But this wasn't working on a headless system as the init doesn't fail, we just don't get any directx data.
Change:
The ddengine monitor changes for 2 seonds.
If no data is added, screen is still black after 2 seconds -> ddengine fail -> use blit.

We also found that the graphic card driver from NVIDIA has the possibility to make a virtual monitor (EDID). Tested it on Friday and it works.
Maybe, the other cards have this possibility too.
