Windows 10 Tablet Mode

Hi,

I'm working on a Windows 10 deployment project and it's a mix of workstations and tablet type hardware. The workstation class hardware seems to be running smoothly using 1.2.1.0 server, but on the tablets we get constant freezing and crashing of the client within a couple seconds of connecting.

I've tried a ton of things, including 1.0.9.5 (which is the current version we had on Windows 7 devices) and every version available between 1.2.0.6-1.2.1.0.

I don't see this as a known issue in my searching, but i'm wondering if you guys have any idea what might be the root cause/solution. Or where to simply start troubleshooting. My organization relies pretty heavily on VNC for support reasons, and we'd be up the creek without it on these devices.

We're about to have to ditch VNC altogether if we can't find a way to make it work, which would really suck.

It's a bit strange...
Normal tablet and desktop mode use different type of exe. Tablet apps are made with another compiler.
Possible you mean that people have a windows pc with a touchscreen...

Do you use the http client or some exe..

Try the 1.2.1.1 viewer exe, this fix some bug that crashed the viewer in case the encoder switched to fast.
You can also try to use a fix encoder instead of using the auto mode.

Yeah It's Window 10, but running on actual tablet hardware. The same exact version we run on Windows 10 on desktop hardware doesn't seem to have these issues. It's very strange.

We use the full viewer client.

I'll try 1.2.1.1! Thanks! I'll also try different encoder options.

Indeed all changes are on the server site, no 1.2.1.1 viewer, it's still 1.2.1.0

Those zip's only seem to have the server in it. Am I doing something wrong?

I have tried the 1.2.1.1 server along with the 1.2.1.0 and 1.2.0.9 viewers the past few days which hasn't solved the issue.

correct, all changes are on the server site...
Gonna check an updated viewer was already made

We tested already with multiple pc, virtual pc with low mem and single cpu, some old atom.
But until now we can't repeat it.
It's a hell to find something when you can't test or see anything.

All vnc versions are compatible, does the tight/real or old vnc ultraviewers behave better.

yeah I've tried 1.2.0.6,8 and 9 viewers as well as 1.2.1.0, versus multiple other combinations of servers of all the above.

It's really crazy!

Does the buildin java viewer connect...
On viewer pc

( require 5800 and 5900 default, but you can set both to the same via the options)

Try with the xp exe ( this is build with an older compiler) it could be that the latest compilers use cpu acceleration stuff that doesn't exist on a tablet.

That's interesting. I had to enable the Java mode, but that seems to be working stable. with the viewer client i would get dropped within 3 seconds. I've had a solid couple minutes of connectivity with Java so far. That is really interesting.

I also turned on logging and see these in the log file.

On top of that, we're trying to integrate the new version into WinPE 10 and can't even get the server to start. In WinPE 3 & 4 we were able to do this with older versions of ultra vnc. Is there any reason you can think of for this?

If you download the bin zip you have several exe build by different compilers.
w2k exe is the oldest compiler, try this one.

Possible newer compiler use kernel stuff not supported in PE

If you use encryption plugins, don't mix 32 ex and 64 bit plugins

I just thought I'd share my latest findings.

To make a long story short. The x86 XP version works in WinPE 10 x86. It even works with the 32 bit SecureDSMPlugin.
The x64 XP Version works in WinPE x64 as well. But it does NOT work with the 32 bit SecureDSMPlugin. Since you can't mix plugin versions it just doesn't work. If you go into the configuration options form the plugin in uvnc_settings it won't even open the window. (it opens the window just fine in x86 WinPE) I suppose to make it work I would have to use the native x64 plugin and have the users switch to that to make it work.

This is a working solution for the PE portion I think. I'll move on and work on the full Windows 10 OS now and see what I can come up with to fix the freeze/disconnect issue.

Latest info from Full OS: It does appear at this point that it is related to the full screen tablet 'Start Menu'. When I connect to a device that is sitting with that screen up it disconnects within a couple seconds. When I connect to other devices that don't have that menu up, the connection seems to remain. Does that make any sense?

Yes, started as as service.
We've got a multitude of Windows 10 test devices, the ones that run in what i refer to as 'tablet mode' are the HP Pro 608 G1 and Dell Venue 5855 which all have the full screen start menu tiles. (all turned sideways like you indicated on docking stations)

Our Microsoft Surface 3 and 4 don't have the problem... But they run like more like a laptop or desktop, they have the partial screen start menu. I am really not sure what else makes them different other than the driver stack itself, but two different 'tablet type' W10 devices exhibit it and the Laptop and desktop type ones don't.

This probably doesn't help much but maybe it'll spur some kind of thought about what it could be.

Interestingly enough, putting the XP binaries on there seems to have made a difference. I'll monitor for a while. It was disconnecting reliably within 3 seconds, and now it's been going solid for a couple minutes already.

I ran into the same problem with build 1.2.1.1 installed on a Touch Dynamic Quest 7 Tablet with 32-bit Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB. I copied the XP x86 binaries as suggested and the connect/crash problem seems to be resolved. However, UVNC is no longer in English. Language is now French. How can I fix this?
