frequently need to refresh screen

I'm using 1.0.0 RC 20 on both ends. Home (viewer) is XP Pro SP2 and work(host) is W2k. I do have the video hook driver installed on both ends and auto scaling turned on. I frequently have to refresh the screen due to blocks that don't get properly updated. Is there any way to reduce how often I have to do this?

-Ultra encoding and local cursor handling don't work together.
Normal when you select the ultra encoder, the local cursor handling is also disabled. But you can manual reenable it.

-Cache: The cache algorithm is simple, actual to simple for faster connections. It is ok for modem use, but on lan, faster and smaller updates tend to corrupt the cache after a while.

Try to test
no cache/ and no ultraencoding

-Even with video driver selected, you can select poll fullscreen.
Poll fullscreen does an extra check on updates that where incorrect detected by the driver.
The driver sometimes miss updates for complex windows. Latest driver (vncdrv.dll 12K) have a fix for it "to many updates during one cycle, use bounding rect"

Check vncdrv.dll (size , date)
Try to activate polling together with the driver

I have refresh problems too, both on an older machine running an older video card and a much newer machine running a very new, more powerful video card. Older is win2k, newer is winxp.

Yes = problem happens

1. and 2. occur when I first connect to the host, and a manual refresh clears them up for that session. 3. and 4. occur anytime during the session.

Both machines are running RC20.3, both have the Video Hook Driver installed (both are version 1.00.18, the one that came with 20.3) and enabled. I have my viewer set to "auto select best settings" (which, when I looked, had disabled AND unchecked "Use cache encoding"), and all machines (viewer and hosts) are on my home lan running thru the same (10/100 autosensing) hub, and both hosts have 10/100 cards (the viewer is wireless).

My tips for strange performance/display problems:
- 1st test if it works with disabling hardware acceleration in the advanced display properties
- then try upgrading your video driver and reenable hw accel
For both it may not matter if you use the UltraVNC driver or not.
@Webmaster: something for http://doc.uvnc.com/general/faq.html ?

I already had in the past:
- a jumpy mouse cursor with the Nvidia driver from WinXP (afair SP1)
- much CPU use if hardware acceleration was not disabled on an Intel 82865G
In both cases, downloading the newest Intel/Nvidia drivers helped.

Well, I followed those instructions, and it definitely helped the newer machine, but the older machine got even worse. Now if I don't do a refresh when I first connect, it continues to produce sketchy graphics (eg, dialog boxes with missing buttons and widgets) until I do so. Interestingly, once I do the refresh (via the UltraVNC refresh button), it's smooth sailing from then on. But if I don't, it continues to be rough seas (to extend the metaphor) throughout the session. After updating the drivers and rebooting, tried all the hw accel settings, no diff.

For me, my problem would be solved if I could just somehow set UVNC to do a refresh everytime it connects.

rename old winvnc.exe RC20.3 (28.03.2005) and add new RC20.4 (31.03.2005) over w2k
and come back with your feedback !

LAN 100 full-duplex <--> LAN 100Mbit/s f-d OK

I was running this thing from the weather channel ("desktop weather"), and when I unstalled it, all was well. Sheesh! Thanks, all, for your comments.
