prior to the 1.8.* version I was able to connect from my work pc to my home PC just fine. But with the 1.9.* upgrades im constantly getting "server running as an application" error when connecting to my home PC.
Both home PC and work PC are running windows 7 64bit. I verified my VNC port is correctly forwarded.
I recently went on vacation and took my laptop with me (also running win7 x64), and I was able to connect from the hotel to my home PC with no problems, so this seems to indicate my home PC is setup correctly.
So how can I successfully connect from my work PC to home PC (again)?

1) Are both server and viewer the same version ?
2) If you use your laptop ( from holliday) @work, does you get the same error.
The error is just some general error, connection with the server is broken.
Or the server closed the connection or the network was broken after init by some firewall or other.
