after fresh install can not set password

Post by bld0401 »

Hi everyone.
I've just installed 64 bit 1.1.8 and I'm unable to set the password. I run 'setapsswd.exe' and the screen flashes but I don't get any type of a prompt.
I've set a password in the 'uvnc_settings.exe' and that hasn't helped. Also, I've run 'setapsswd.exe' after setting the password in the unvc_settings.exe
I run testauth.exe and it doesn't thrown an error.
A error is logged in mslogon.log -->> "30/4/2013 14:08 Invalid attempt from client 192.168.0.102"

I try to connect using Chicken and Safari and the password is not accepted.

This is my first experience with this VNC software
Any help?

Thanks, Bruce.

testauth.exe is part of AD authentication, don't use it for checking a password
setpasswd.exe is used by the installer to set a random password on first install, don't use it for setting a password

Howto set a new password.

1) Run uvnc_settings.exe in the same folder as winvnc.exe by a user that can write to the ultravnc.ini file.
The user that start uvnc_settings.exe need permission to have write permission in the ultravnc folder.
(test it with notepad if you are unsure)
On Vista >= start with "runas admin" to handle the UAC protection of files in the "program files" folder.

2) Start winvnc.exe as application and set set the password via the properties. Same as 1° user that start winvnc.exe
need write permission.

3) If winvnc.exe is started as service the settings are saved via a desktop user impersonation "runas".
This doesn't work in ALL cases. Desktop user must be a local user or act as a local user. On XP/2003
you must uncheck the protect box of the runas popup.
