Dual desktop problem

Hello all,

I'm running UltraVNC on a "blind" server, which sits in a closet at home.
I use UltraVNC to remote access the server from the rest of the house, or from my office.
It works flawlessy, I could'nt be happier.
Currently the server (via Gigabit Ethernet) feeds audio media files to my others notebooks/smartphones (even though upnp protocol), and video files to an HTPC connected o my TV set.

I would like now to dismantle my HTPC, and use the server also as a HTPC (job it can do without any issue), cause I find useless to have two different PCs in the house, one as a server and one as an HTPC (even more because they are placed less than a meter away from each other).

The only thing that stops me it that I have no idea on how to access the server via UltraVNC without "disturbing" the HTPC software (MediaPortal), which would run fullscreen.
In other words: if I use the server as an HTPC, I cannot work from remote on the same desktiop, which will be completely occupied by the HTPC application, but I need a "real" clear desktop to work with.

So, is it possible to define a second desktop, and work on it with UltraVNC, while the first desktop is dedicated to the HTPC?
I run Windows 7 on the server, and the platform is a AMD E350 APU, with an integrated Radeon HD 6310 graphic card.

I could even add a second cheap video board, if needed.

Any help will be appreciated.

Well, this forum is for discussing VNC-related software and not a troubleshooting forum. I'm sure a moderator will be by sometime and address this, though.

On a Windows system, VNC does not provide multiple desktops. It presents the user interface that is active at that time. It sounds like RDP might be a good solution if you are using a server OS, however a Windows client OS does not allow for multiple user desktops at the same time even via RDP.

A multiple monitor configuration should be doable in VNC, though. If your active desktop session has the HTPC on one monitor (should probably be the secondary) and everything else on the other monitor (likely primary), I think you can basically get what you want. The mirror driver allows you to see both monitors at once, but I'm guessing that's not what you want here.

I can remote control a system with multiple monitors without issue and switch between the monitors with the button located in the toolbar at the top of the viewer session. I hope this explanation is clear enough to move you forward.

Tried you latest update with 3 different computers with same issue. Nothing happens.
Could the reason be because I have installed Eventghost directly to C: and not in programfiles?

If not, you may want to search for a way to make Windows 7 a remote desktop server. I found years ago that someone had hacked one of the windows dll files to allow unlimited RDP connections, effectively turning a win7 machine into a remote desktop server, I'm pretty sure it was for win7 ...
