Application mode vs Service mode

How do I ensure that when I launch UltraVNC Server, itwill should up in SERVICE mode in the taskbar? On some machines it does, on other machines it shows up in APPLICATION mode.

On any machine where it shows up in SERVICE mode, it works great and I can remotely connect to that machine from any pc.
On any machine where it show up in APPLICATION mode, I cannot connect any of those machine.

I am currently running Ver 1.1.8...but I had this issue with earlier versions.
I am running WIn 8, Win 7 and XP machines

So, what controls the default mode? Do I have to uninstall and reinstall to change the mode??? Or is it a setting somewhere??

Application mean that winvnc is started by the user.
( manual or by placing a copy in the startup folder)
Service mean that the service manager start winvnc ( running as system)
this start winvnc even before a user logon.

The systray winvnc icon allow you to install/uninstall start/stop the service.
(Just make sure that you don't have winvnc in a startup folder and as service... you can only run one.

I note some of my machines say ( in the task tray) that they are running the service with vnchook

1) what is vnchook and how do I get rid of it?

2) I read something about snhook(?) being better than vnchook. Where do I make this change?

3) My goal now is to maximize performance - its very slow. Already reduced resolution, colors, and removed aero and wallpaper and selected Poll Full Screen, Foreground Window, Window Under Cursor. What other options can I tweak??

In most cases select
[v] Poll fullscren
[v] use system hook
[v] low accuracy
Unselect all other

OS ?

The difference between schook and vnchook is small, both give hints about the changed screen positions.
Unselect in options if you don't want to use it.
The mirror driver is faster ( if supported by the OS) but there are some restriction ( hardware acceleration
bypass the mirror driver)

less colors ? not always
If you want to transmit video, jpeg give the best compression ( encoder u2), but this require 32bit colors.

The performance depend on the time used to compress/decompress and the available bandwidth.
For low bandwidth high compression is better, as the slowest part is the network. Using a Gb lan the
compression is the slowest part...
GB LAN: hextile/u2 encoder ( manual select it "viewer option")
Internet: zrle/tight encoder
Wifi: you need to play a little with the encoders, depend on how the router handle
small packets.

My needs are modest . I have a home network with several machines of various vintages and for various purpose:
PC01-Win 8 (main machine home office)
PC02-Win 7 Home Premium (wifes home office)
PC03-Win XP SP3 ( old XP games)
PC04-Win XP SP3 (music management for home theatre 1)
PC05-Win 7 Home Premium (guitar studio)
PC03-Win XP SP3 (music management for home theatre 2)
PC07-Win XP SP3 - netbook - casual use
PC08-Win XP SP3 - laptop casual use

All I want Ultra VNC for, is to connect to any machine from my main PC ( PC01) to do basic troubleshooting, setup, tweaking, software installs and removals, et.
Whats happening now is that while I can access any PC off the network very quickly (ie via Explorer) , its VERY SLOW when I use Ultra VNC.

After many years of using UltraVNC, its unfortunately becoming a bit unusable with respect to performance. I started looking at alternatives such as TeamViewer 8, and so far its quite impressive...and faster:)

Yep, Teamviewer is doing a great job in Stuttgart. Whith a staff of over 20 people you can do a lot..

What sound strange is that all conenctions are slow. From my experience this can indicate some
network trouble, vnc stress the network with a lot of small packages. Teamviewer was using some auto tuner
so it possible better handle the real network situation.

Do you have the same slooow connections when you run the viewer on your laptop ?
What encoder do you select ? Try to set manual instead of auto. What's the fastests ( hextile zrle zlib) ?
What's the CPU load... uvnc auto limit the speed when cpu is above trigger.
The 1.1.8 has good default settings, if you remove the ultravnc.ini and once run the winvnc.exe manual
the file is recreated ( you need to set a passwd again)

I'm running HD video over vnc with 20 FPS at my home network ( 1 GB ethernet, server i7 with a 20% cpu load)
On a old celeron it's slower, but for managment it's OK.

Even if my winvnc is running as a service, sometimes the viewer refuses to connect, saying server is in application mode.
It seems to happen if and only if the server config dialogs are open, or have been closed few seconds ago.

I have noticed it during testing in localhost connection, of if I tried to open server config by remote Viewer.
