Kaspersky+Win7+UVNC Help!!

Post by cmbcne »

Hi all. I have used Kaspersky Internet Security (KIS) for several years, both on my own computers and on those of friends & family. I am often called on to provide tech support for those same people.

To do this, I have used UltraVNC. I put the Server on the friend’s machine running as a service and put the Viewer on my own. I set it so the friend’s machine has a static IP address, then I set up port forwarding in the router for port 5900/screen 0 to point to that IP. All this has worked great in the past. I have a number of machines with several different router brands all working fine.

There are two of them, however that do not work: First I get the connection window that says “Connecting….” for about 20 seconds, then the Viewer Message windows opens, with “Failed to connect to server”. The connection window never says anything about the password. I have tried this with the Kaspersky firewall disabled and it’s still broken.

From all this I arrive at a few possible “culprits”:
• Windows 7, since the two that do not work are both Win7 machines.
• The newer version of KIS, possibly in how it interacts with Windows 7
• Since the connection window never mentions the password (which it does in other cases), there’s a problem with the password but I have, of course, checked it several times.
• An error in setting up port forwarding and the packets are never reaching to target PC.

I’d like to pick your collective brains and compile a list of options to try.

Go to ShieldsUp (google it) and do a port scan from the problematic machines, to see what ports are open (especially 5900 or whatever their listening VNC port is).

Try uninstalling Kaspersky completely, and check for any other software firewalls.

Install a secondary remote control service (TeamViewer or LogMeIn Free) as insurance.
