Initial Connections and disconnects

Post by JonD »

Just lately I've notice that when I connect to a remote server, I get past the password and then their screen appears very briefly and then I'm disconnected. I frequently have to repeat connection attempts 2 or 3 times. Once connected everything seems quite stable.

Not sure what has changed. I am on a wireless connection with somewhat variable speeds so that may be the issue.

I did "roll my own" ChunkVNC to include the latest UVNC so maybe I'll see if that is related.

Does anyone have experiences similar to this?

I've never experienced it myself yet.

Try compiling with the included UltraVNC server and viewer and report back. Unless it's an issue with the newer version you put in there I'd have to say it's probably an issue with the wireless connection.

I'll certainly revert to a previous UVNC and report back...

my guess is (also) the wireless connection. (the joys of operating from rural access :-) )

Latest experiences make me think that it is related to power options on the remote computer... disk power down etc

I'm still seeing this issue... the client's screen appears briefly and then disconnects. Takes 3 or 4 tries sometimes... other times it work right away. I now think it's related to some sort of time out.

When I connect quickly, there seems to be no issue. If the connection takes a little longer, the problem surfaces.

So my question:
Is there a setting that affects timeout? I suspect just a slightly longer time might work for me.

Interesting, I've experienced this before but the problem seemed to have gone away for me in the last 2 builds of ChunkVNC.
I figured this issue was squashed with the latest UltraVNC server, bummer that you are still having issues...

I know before you mentioned that you have an high latency ISP. Was it because it was a wireless ISP? Maybe that is the issue??

For 6 months of the year we/I am on an island using wireless. I don't remember having the issue on the city setup but can't check that out for a while. Certainly ping times seem to be high via the wireless setup.

It just seems that time is the issue. If the connection time was a little more forgiving, I think I would be OK.... can't be sure, of course until I find the setting (if there is one).

Sorry I can't be of more help, maybe Rudi can chime in on why this might be happening.

I would try it with encryption completely turned off. I suspect encryption, and particularly high security AES under SecureVNC, adds enough overhead to exacerbate weaknesses in wireless and other flaky connections.

B,
I think you forgot you're in the ChunkVNC forum. :P Turning the encryption off would require code modification.

Oh...

Well, maybe he could roll back to an older Chunk before you started using SecureVNC?

JonD's connection issues have been around for a long time (I believe when MSRC4 was used with ChunkVNC) and from what I've been able to tell it has to do with his high latency wireless ISP that he's stuck using half the year.

Maybe I'll make him a special test version without encryption just to see what happens.

Just to clear... once fully connected it's solid (no drops) and reasonable response in controlling the remote. It's just that (sometimes) aggravating initial connection.

I've had issues with connecting to OSX when my laptop was on a wireless network. It seems that because the wireless authentication is per user, the brief moment when the vnc client connects to laptop, it is connected via the logged in user's wifi credentials, then seems to switch to whatever the logon screen process user is and drops the wifi connection, leaving the VNC client in limbo until a "connection reset" error occurs.

My advice is if you have this issue, try using a lan cable connection and see if the problem is resolved. Hope this helps (and is related to the issues you all are having). I pulled my hair out for ages with this issue!
