I finally installed the latest windows updates today for win7 x64 (except for the SP1 update) and now I can't connect to that machine.
When I try to connect to that machine from my win2k machine I get an error saying "the server running as application".
I'm using the MS logon method and none of the security plugins. The mslogon.log just says it received a connection, but nothing after that.
I took a look through the event viewer and the only thing that stands out to me is an application crash in ultravnc due to an issue with samcli.dll.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

ultravnc stopped working after windows update
Re: ultravnc stopped working after windows update
Obviously that's a security DLL. I would probably just uninstall and reinstall UltraVNC with proper admin rights.
It kind of stinks that a Windows Update would kill a validly registered service, but it's not surprising.

Re: ultravnc stopped working after windows update
I tried that actually. I uninstalled UltraVNC first.
I was logged in as an administrator, and then I even ran the installer with the "Run As Administrator" option and still no luck.
It used to work fine until some windows update screwed it all up.

Re: ultravnc stopped working after windows update
You didn't say, but are you installed as a service (I assumed you were)?
Also, try turning off all encryptions and just use a basic VNC password, to see if that helps.
Some people find that switching to another "flavor" of VNC (Tight, Tiger, Real) helps them out of these kind of stuck conditions.
Edit: Related issue? https://forum.ultravnc.net/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=28562

Re: ultravnc stopped working after windows update
Yes, I do have it installed as a service. I have not been using the DSM Plugins at all.
I turned off the MS Logon option and set it to ask for a VNC password.
Just using a password allows me to connect fine.
The good news is I appear to have fixed my issue!!
This time while fiddling with things I checked the "New MS Logon" option.
Before I only had "Require MS Logon" checked and I had added the Administrators Group to that.
Now that I also checked "New MS Logon" and added my user to that dialog I can connect fine!
I looked at the other thread and I do not have those issues. I even opened up Word for a little while just to see. The tray icons look fine too.
In my case I have Windows 7 Professional x64.
Thanks for the help and getting me to play around with the options!

Re: ultravnc stopped working after windows update
Sure. And thanks to you for letting us know how it turned out. New MS Logon, huh? Must be Kerberos or something...
Hmm, from a post at rafsoftware.com, an excerpt from the UltraVNC Changelog:

Yeah, you just never know what's going to change!
Hopefully this will help someone else out too if they have the same symptoms!

Re: ultravnc stopped working after windows update
Hi, i try your solution by check teh new MS logon option.
That works only if i add username in the list.
Is there a way to allow directly a user group as administrators ?

Re: ultravnc stopped working after windows update
Outstanding, thanks for updating. Just having the same issue on Win Server 2012 <shudder> and your solution works.
